"You would need contingencies for food and shelter. But you would need to put a serious amount of resources into any effort to cope with an event on this scale, so it poses a dilemma," he said.

The volcanic winter resulting from a super-eruption could last several years or decades, depending on the scale of an eruption, and according to recent computer models, could cause cooling on a global scale of 5-10C.

Falcon, I don't understand why you would be offended by something like this. Eventually everything will come to an end. Just like the Earth my some day come to an end, however, that will be MANY MANY years from now but still, it will come to an end.

I, on the other hand, do think America will someday fall. It could be under the control of another country more powerful than us or some killer disease could come and wipe out a majority of us (very unlikely however).

Remember, Meteor, we aren't the Roman empire. We know that lead is unhealthy.

Also, our system of government is so unique that the idea of civil uproar is not a threat. Our system cannot follow a precedent that doesn't exist.

Remember, the Mongol Empire, which was FAR stronger than ANY empire to precede it, stopped (for lack of a better word) because its leader died, nothing else, pacifying them for unknown reasons.

Sudden2, while you say that your assertion is scientific fact, you're missing one key part of that theory: we don't know when, or even certainly if, that will happen. If yellowstone goes kablooie in a thousand years, the States could be gone by then already. Of course, I don't mean to say it's not a possibility, or that the US will certainly fall in a thousand years.

The assertion that yellowstone exploding is 10 times more likely than an asteroid strike is just that, an assertion. There is no solid proof for that figure, no calculus to find the probability of Yellowstone erupting.

And, there is a lot more food in the world than gets to people. There is already lots of starvation in poorer parts of the world, and we have enough food to last us for a long time if old yeller does go up, plus importation. So, mass starvation isn't what we should be worrying about. Monkey.

Next, I agree with q and guido. I don't know much about global economics, but china's steel buys have raised the cost of structural steel by some 25%. All of a sudden, it costs another 10 million dollars to finish the addition to my high school. Ni hung beng, you chinese people.

Yellowstone is expected to blow in 100-10,000 years so it is difficult to tell, plus, the decimation from the blast will destroy everything in the middle of the US to Texas in a matter of days, importation would be really hard because all of our harbors would be full of ash.

As the leading first world country, we most likely will live to see the explosion, and when it does, we will regret it.



And Yellowstone WILL erupt. If a corrupt government or national war doesn't get to us first, yellowstone will.

For some reason, I dont see Japan becoming the next economic super power. Yeah, they dominate in electronics, but so does Korea. And most of the Japanese "imports" are assembled in America or Australia. Japan is to dependent on imports, lackign the one thing that any nation needs to become an economic superpower: natural resources.

Cenright, me and you have the same beliefs, but its not my job to ruin this thread by sharing my religious beliefs, starting some big off-topic argument resulting in locking this thread, so this time I'll think like a non-believer.

I think that a few countries will try to overtake us, causing some type of World War III. Then, we probably will fall because we aint got our shit together enough to be trying to helping people overseas when we still need to help the people here.

These are my personal opinions, so dont try to argue about my beliefs because you are only going to look like a jackass arguing with someone and I'm still gonna believe the same thing, because it always happens.
