    adaptation!

well, you know how those saltwater fish, that like lived in an isolated saltwater lake (which gradually de-salted itself), became the same fish, but freshwater? well here's my idea:

Make a big test place, it would be airtight, it would be a small neighborhood...

Life would be normal, money would be irrelivant, (or kept to make it feel more "at home"), and they would use less and less oxygen, say -3% oxygen every year, (more carbon dioxide), and let this process continue for 5-10 generations, and by the time this has happend, humans would be able to live off significantly less oxygen...therefor allowing us to live in places with less oxygen (mars?), and less susceptable to pollution...

    or!

you could eventually cut off all oxygen and see if we could get a human species that could live with NO OXYGEN!...that would be incredibly helpfull...

fell free to flame/add to the idea

(i expect flames on human rights, experimentation, and some other crap)

    RE: adaptation!

Eh? Your theory has one major flaw.

No matter if they are fresh water, or salt water fish, they still need oxygen to live. So due humans. It is true that people who live in higher alttitudes are better adapted to less oxygen (that is why olympic athletes train in high alttitdues).

    Humans need oxygen.

well theres still the MUCH LESS oxygen option, and that would still be cool...

Microevolution doesn't work like that. Oxygen is fundamental to complex organism function.

ok then what about removing somthing else? like food, make them eat less and less...and see what happens?

Look at Etheopia for the answers to both of your questions. They live at very high altitudes and eat very little.

They also happen to be dropping like flies.

Shetage, why are you so bent on artificially evolving mankind? Last time that happened, all of humanity was wiped out, save two people...whoops, that was the ending of Evangelion, nevermind.

Or we could jus keep living the way we are now.

                    RE: Re: RE: adaptation!

I was linked to an article a long long time ago about how humans have the potential to have up to twelve helixes of DNA instead of just two.

I didn't actually verify the source or really care too much since it seemed a little farfetched, but it might be an interesting read if you actually want to research the matter.

                      ohhhh sweet....

I just find it interesting that we can evolve like we do....

Do you think we will only have 4 fingers (no pinky) and one large eye eventually?

                      More arms?

                      Idk...

I do not think it is possible to evolve much more because the technology helps us survive now...(more then it ever did)...

maybie we will eventually become somthing like the combine in Half life 2, big globs of skin, with little muscle, and a very large brain...and perhaps the ability to switch into different forms?

                        RE: Re: RE: adaptation!

Why would we only have one large eye? that would be a step back. We evolved to have two eyes to add to depth perception, vision range, focus abilities, and many other aspects of superior vision.

In addition to that, everything you mentioned is unrealistic and physically impossible. Think about the mechanisms of evolution before you come up with weird impossibilities for what we may evolve into.

Think of it this way, humans are shallow. A race of three-armed one-eyed folks would not survive. They would be considered freaks by the scientific world, and demons by the religious. They would be shunned, no one would want to have sex with any of them, and eventually, they would die off.

Win. Human evolution is finished. And future human genetic development will be self-inflicted.

Evolution is evergoing... People who are so shallow as to believe that humans have "finished" evolving are... ignorant, say.

I hated sounding so vulgar but still.
Okay, we still have so many diseases, and there is somebody who develops an immunity to it. Human evolution hasn't stopped. Nowhere near.

Besides, most evolution takes hundreds of thousands of years... You can't just be like "poof! Oh ho! I suddenly don't need oxygen to live anymore!"

                              But I wouldn't know now would I? I'm only 14.
