    Computer Help

I couldn't find a straight up computer category so I'm just going to post this here. :\
Well, I just got up and tried to boot up my desktop and was greeted by an error. Specifically,

    \windows\system32\config\system
    status 0xc00000e9
windows failed to load because system registry file is missing or corrupt.

I'm running vista and I don't really know much other relevant specs of the top of my head. Oh and I'm posting this from my emergency laptop.

I'm confused by this and really have no idea what to do. So, I was hoping someone here would be able to shed some light on this situation. Also I have a final in an hour and a half so I probably won't be checking this until after I finish, thanks to my commute.

P.s Bad grammar is bad. I'm in a rush.

Unplug all peripherals and try booting again. If that doesn't work...
Reinstall Vista as a last resort.

Don't know too much about computers myself but I've been told this program will help fix registry issues. Obviously it won't solve every problem but it might be worth a shot.

This program is very dangerous if used incorrectly.
I might be thinking of another program though (lol there's too many to count!)

Anything that edits the registry could be dangerous if used incorrectly.

But if he can't load Windows, whats the point?
                Just reinstall.

Do you have any data on your HDD that you don't want to lose? If not I would do a clean install. It looks to be a problem with your registry which is pretty much fatal. Could have been a virus that deleted or changed registry files around.

If you have sensitive information you could try to DL Ubuntu onto a flash drive and boot your PC from that. Then go in and transfer files you would like to keep.

I would imagine that this error message translates loosely to "Windows is completely ****ed"

On the upside, a fresh install isn't terribly hard, and since this is 2011 you probably have everything important backed up in ten different places. If not, I dunno if a ****ed registry would impede file-recovery.

edit: If you boot from a Windows CD, there's likely a 'System Recovery Options' menu that's worth investigating. Probably a long shot, I doubt it will repair registry files but there's no harm in trying.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 <-- This is for Windows XP (and doesn't guarantee any results), but the same general concept probably applies to Vista. Short version: you use the Windows CD to restore registry backups from System Restore points.

                      Re: Computer Help

There's a LOT of things that could be causing that error. The only thing you really need to worry about is the off chance your hardrive might be having some troubles. If you see this error again you're going to need to purchase/call out your warrenty. Unless you REALLY want to go through the super long process of troubleshooting over a forum. You'll have to reformat. If you don't know how to reformat just ask. You probalby can restore your registry but I never have. This is why you should back your registry up right when you install your computer.

                          Re: Computer Help

There's two ways to approach this problem. If you want the easy way out of the problem, simply reinstall Vista (or install Windows 7, much much much better). See point 3 below to save important files. Otherwise, we can try to troubleshoot the problem.

1- Download this: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/avg-rescue-cd-download and burn it to a CD. You should try scanning for viruses. A badly written virus can damage your registry. There are also options for repairing the registry, but I have no idea how effective they are. It might be a good idea to try. It cannot hurt.

2- Stick your Vista disk in your CD drive and restart your computer. Choose the option to repair your computer. If it doesn't work, you can try the System Restore. You did make one recently, right?

3- Download this: http://www.ubuntu.com/start-download...release=latest. Burn the ISO to a CD. If you boot from it, you will arrive in a Live CD environment. From there, you should be able to go through your hard drive and save what you need to a USB key or an external hard drive. Ubuntu is user-friendly, but it is quite picky about who its friends are. If you have some problems doing something, just send us back a message. Fido or I (and probably other people I don't know that are using it) can help you.

If the problem is temporarily solved but happens again after a while, it might be a sign that your hard drive is failing. If you are still under warranty, you should contact your manufacturer. If not, you will have to buy another one. Hard drives prices are awfully high now though, so let's hope that's not the problem.

That's about it. If you have any questions, we are here to help.

This will most likely do the trick.

I also suggest, like someone else did before me, try to upgrade to Win7 as soon as you can. My parents' desktop kept getting registry errors and they kept having to rollback until I told them to get Win7. No errors so far.
