I know the best thing to drink is water, but is there any reason I should avoid diet drinks (despite the fact they have 0 calories and, at best, a few milligrams of sodium?)
They're terrible for your teeth. I can't recommend not drinking them enough. They're...essentially the number one cause of cavities (Mountain Dew is worse, though, so are some Grape juices)

However, if you're going to drink it, diet drinks are definitely the way to go. They're better for your teeth than the standard versions, and zero calories means that it won't affect your dieting at all.

I'm a big fan of swimming for workout purposes. It works a few things -- you get light resistance training on your arms/legs when stroking, and it does wonders as a cardiovascular workout. If you aren't a strong swimmer, stay away from deeper bodies of water, because there is a threshold from when you are tired, to when you just can't move/tread, and something like that is very likely to trigger nerves/fear.

Yeah Reach I am probably going to avoid diet drinks anyway, but I was just curious what the actual negative impacts were.

This, 100%. It works your entire body, and it burns calories/fat quickly because it is one of the most demanding sports. Not to mention it's cardiovascular, as Halogen said, which will improve your heart a lot. Also easy on the joints, so you don't have to worry about injuries there.

I don't recommend running as much. I tried it before, and negative effects:

            - Knee joints started hurting after 1-2 weeks (went away in another 2 weeks though). If your joints start to hurt, run lightly, take more breaks, and maybe take supplements. If the pain doesn't go away soon, then stop, because something is probably wrong.
            - During both seasons of cross-country running that I participated in, my left toenail (second one, "index" toenail) grew gray and then fell off completely. I suspect it was because my socks/shoes did not have enough slack. Fortunately, the toenail grew back both times, but it's an experience I never want to repeat.

And I don't recommend weight training either, mainly because it stunts growth if you're on the young side and tends to cause injuries easily.

So swimming is overall the greatest sport for improving shape. I can attest to this. Although I'm slightly on the skinny side, I'm definitely healthy: BMI is 18-19, and body fat is about 12%. Halogen speaks truth; stay in shallow swimming pool lanes when starting.

I feel to disagree, it may not be for everyone, but I get diarrhea from aspartame. It's not that it was a coincidence either, I had it for 8 days before realizing it came from the soda I was drinking.
Aspartame might not necessarily do anything bad to your body, but it may cause liquid excrementure.

                P90x is pretty great.
(Its pirateable, just dont let them find out or they wont send you the fancy shirt)

Although I can't really say much objectively about the "speed" at which you would lose weight with it since I also run 5 miles a day.

This is terrible advice. It says he's 24 in his profile.

Resistance training is the single best thing you can do if you're losing weight.

The problem with relying solely on cardio to lose weight is you'll get large amounts of muscle wasting, and you'll end up looking flabby or overly skinny, depending on how much weight you lose. I've seen it a million times over.

Ideally, you want to keep as much of your muscle mass as possible to give you a lean look. If you plan on looking even remotely fit, you need to do resistance training, and the best way to do it is to use weights.

Also, any good weight training circuit is also a cardiovascular workout, so it's the best of both worlds.

Ha ha, I'm years younger than him and I just posted what occurred to me based on personal experience. And very few of the swimmers I know are flabby or overly skinny. What works for one person may not work for another, I guess...I never found weight training particularly helpful for me.

my personal experience, find exercises you can do at home, buy a cheapo weight set and a skipping rope and don't eat like a fatty. i'm the kind of person that if I needed to travel to the gym or make any sort of special arangements to workout (unless its soccer), it would be too much hassle and i'd quit after a month

Which brings up the point, one of the toughest parts is finding the motivation to keep exercising. Exercising is one of those things where one tends to quit or slack off easily. If you ever find that motivation is a problem, try setting concrete goals for yourself (e.g. I plan to exercise at least "x" hours this week, or I will exercise with a buddy, etc.).

A good way i found to lose weight is to not be on the internet.

That alone can help you lose up to 5 pounds a week!

Basically, the key to losing weight is to keep your metabolism high and to eat right. What poison- posted earlier is literally how you can do that however you don't necessary have to do cardo everyday to stay fit but it is good for you.

Drink water non-stop for a month. It'll remove all the toxins from your body. You just lost 20-30 pounds. Congrats!

id say that if i were assuming the person wuz incredibly unhealthy and didnt drink much water n the 1st place. but thats comin 4rm a person that drinks about a gallon of water evry day, i kno sum ppl that only drink soda and etc. and go days w/o actual water o.O

also swimming is a v good idea as it works p much all of yr muscles. another good idea would b 2 go running through wooded+hilly areas if u can handle it, but swimming iz ez and fun and its summer and sounds awsm rite now.
