I really want to hear about this. Could you make a thread detailing the build, or PM me it or something?

EDIT: I mean, I was under the impression that 12 cores/24 threads was the most possible at the moment (In the consumer market, with two CPU slot boards). I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to servers, so I'm probably missing something.

      Re: New MacBook Pro

It's a server build. There is no reason to use those parts for a desktop PC. I can tell you its not a 48 core cpu though, it is multiple cpu's being used together.

I'm very well aware of all of this.

So I did a tiny bit of googling and answered all of my own questions. I really have no idea about servers, I need to do a bit more research.

It's a quad socket server motherboard with a quad socket expansion board, running 8 1090T Phenom II x6's. Definitely not the sort of power any normal consumer would need.

However if you do any sort of rendering, or physics simulation, building one of these is probably right up your alley.

Yeah, I see, I had no idea that four socket boards existed for consumer use.

Buy TYAN S8812WGM3NR MEB Server Motherboard Quad Socket G34 AMD SR5690 DDR3 1333 with fast shipping and top-rated customer service. Once you know, you Newegg!

This board has a ton more RAM slots than mine, and support for the newer 12core amd cpu's. Do want.

Wouldn't it be better to get a massive amount of cheap motherboards and cpu's and run them in parallel?

Most custom (desktop) PC builders charge about the same price though. Its only when you build the PC yourself you save incredible amounts of cost

Laptops on the other hand...eh. You're quite limited with whats available on the market since you can't really build one yourself

hahahahaha people make a living building custom desktops? why the **** am i in college lmao

btw, that infographic was partially debunked by someone a while ago iirc. I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but I def remember there was something wrong with the info. brb googling.

edit: okay, so there's a few things wrong that I can see. It's not the cheapest Mac Pro model but w/e. The bigger issue is that it isn't an iMac, which is what people actually buy instead of a goddamned workstation seriously. They're comparing this to DIY newegg gaming rigs. Apples/oranges. Additionally, it's out of date, most noticeably on the HDD's. They're now much cheaper. ummm what else... the RAM is ECC RAM, which is really expensive but really good for workstations. Also, equivalent Dell/HP/younameit workstations cost about the same at the same time period.

In fairness, if you did this with, say, an iMac and an equivalent Dell Dimension or whatever, Apple would probably still have upwards of 10% markup. But this image is a little silly.

Wasn't it just a month or two ago we had that 9-page thread about why not to get a Mac? Now some of THAT was interesting...

Yeah, I made that thread, it's a little more accurate since it's more consumer-level than the mac pro that the image above details. Organism made some good points about how the iMac is an all-in-one and I compared it to regular desktops, but that really wasn't relevant anyways, since I was attempting to deter people from buying it, and trying to encourage building your own. There's no point in ever buying an all-in-one. It's slightly easier to move around, that's it.
