    Re: Laptop suggestions

I have a 17 inch laptop that I got for school a few years ago but I found it to be so inconvenient for school it's not even funny. Two years later I got a netbook and it is the most convenient thing in the world. They are so light that you don't even notice the extra weight on your back. My 17 inch laptop was like 10 pounds adding in the charger so it kind of hurt my shoulder after awhile.

Chances are that you will rarely if ever need to do cpu/graphics intensive work on the go so it is much better to have a really nice desktop, for cheap, and get a light weight laptop or netbook.

For this reason I recommend a 13" or 14" laptop, if you can find one with powerful components.

My first laptop was a 14" HP w/ 512MB of RAM and a 1.4GHz processor, which in 2005 was the boss.

Although I totally agree with getting a gaming desktop and a cheap work laptop, a gaming laptop can still do you for school. I find net-books convenient as hell to type on cause the keyboards are so damn small. If it's a weight issue I guess that depends on your personal strength.

I guess I just have small fingers. I can type 100+ wpm on my netbook fairly easily. The screen is restrictive at times but I really shouldn't be doing so much work on my netbook anyway. There is no reason to be programming with visual studio on a netbook. You can, but there isn't enough screen space.

I am glad OP didn't ignore my post. Go with the asus bro, its an i7 QUAD core and a GB of dedicated video memory. It will play ANY game on the market now and for the next 3-5 years WITHOUT any upgrades at all (I am not taking DX upgrades into consideration). 4 GB of DDR3 memory. Gaming laptops aren't as expensive as they once were. My coworker got a $650 HP a year ago to play Aion and its still rocking ass on full detail.

              Re: Laptop suggestions

It's very difficult to mix school and gaming on a single machine. I would suggest sticking with Low End gaming, and High Battery Life.

This is the computer I use for school. The battery lasts for an insane amount of time, comparable to a mac, and plays games up to the caliber of Mirrors Edge on medium high settings.
              Asus U43-X1

The A1 has bluetooth, if you are interested, and they all come with USB3.

Be warned that there are some minor issues with the laptop. Poor soundcard, not-so-nice trackpad. But I absolutely love it. The battery lasts a whole day at university, and hell it can run mirror's edge.....

Note: It IS loaded with a lot of crap-ware, as all laptops are, so you'll need to do a thorough clean. (Regardless of the laptop you get.)
