I'd kill him because I like to kill people in my free time. I probably wouldn't even know he'd be killing people by the time he's dead.

This exercise was never meant to be approached as a Kantian. All the formulations of the 1/many problem were built to try and prove why utilitarianism wasn't feasible in the real world, because trying to wrangle the sheer volume of modifiers inherant in making such a decision would leave you paralyzed and unable to act.

But that's not a very realistic situation if we're just dealing with morality. If there are no consequences, then **** it. Kill his ass. Enjoy yourself while you're at it too, because all you have to do is live with a very small amount of guilt.

I know you said the situation is hypothetical, but I don't think that should mean you neglect what really would happen if you killed someone. Guilt is not a suitable punishment for this crime even though it was committed with good intentions.

Well, I guess there are two different questions here:
            1. Should I do this in regard to the consequences? (Guilt and possible jail time)

            2. Is this the right thing to do? (i.e. morality)

In answer to the first, mine would be no. In considering both questions, my answer would again be no. But in answer to the second question...

            that's a bit harder.

Dangit. I just realized that there is already another section of the forum for this.

Oh well. I think this will be the only question I post then, just to get the "Chat" forum thinking again.

Actually I like the forum misplacement in this case. Chit Chat needs some stimulation.

All I was saying is that it would have made people think harder about their morals, i.e. if they're really that strong and that they believe what they are doing is right.

I think a lot more people would have said 'no' to the whole situation if the jail time was added to the original question.

Just food for thought, really. Good thread though. I appreciate that you actually took the time to create a scenario to get people to think even for a few seconds.

                    Thanks for the support foilman!

Yeah, I do think many people were just stating that they would do it while not considering consequences. But another question is: would they/you/I do it? If you actually had a gun in your hand, and had the chance, would you actually be able to kill the guy.

I'm guessing that I really wouldn't. I already don't know if it's the right think to do, then add on the strength it actually takes to pull the trigger? It would be hard.

I think this should be the only one hahaha my definition of a philosophical question is if I want orange juice or milk with my combo at McDonalds.
