I Need Help

I bought a LINKSYS Network Adapter so I can get internet from my friends on my lap top. Well, I don't know if the signal is too weak or something, but I can't get the internet. When I do get it I'm outside sitting almost next to their house -- not where I want to be.

How can I strengthen my device, or do I have to buy a new one?

From my knowledge, I don't think that you are in the signalling range, and I think that the device is only available within certain small parameters of the network adapter. I doubt you can strengthen your device unless you return the LINKSYS Network Adapter and ask your friendly services for something which has a stronger signal for an affordable price.

Also, try to keep the router near open spaces, maybe a window or as close as possible to your friend's house.

Typically Wireless INTERNET adaptors peak signal strength* is at 10 feet, in visual range of the router. At my house, it has to go through the wall, and floor, to get to my laptop. It generally sits at 70% capacity.

Figure out where in the house the router is, and make sure it's not password encoded. His router could have an auto-reject on unknown devices or it could be a different form of frequency. Channels vary from 1 - 11, and encryption can vary from simple WPA to WPA128. There are a few other forms of encryption.
Make sure you have the password right, and try to use a network helper program, such as Network Magic, to help you connect properly.

I was afraid of that. It's a 12 mile bike ride back to where I got it. And I already went there and back twice.

Are there any other devices I can get that will help it?

EDIT: Zag, I've gotten the access from them, I just have to bring my computer outside to get it, and I'd rather do it from my room. My room is about 35 feet from their house. They also have no security on their internet.

I would assume that if you can get internet when closer to your friends house, but not from your room the signal is too weak. =[
It sucks that you have dial up, no wonder you want to steal their internet. =P

Even with their internet my lap top is only a Windows 2000, lol. It runs the same as my dial up (oh, I got grounded from that again).

Which reminds me, is it possible to pick up the signal from my mobile phone internet?

are you detecting their network at all? Or just getting a 0%, or next to none, signal strength?

I get between 34 and 40% outside. In my room, I don't detect anything.

It's the fact that the signal has to go through so much stuff.
There is BOUND to be interference.

Get it as close as you can to the emitter, and try to reduce the amount of stuff in a direct path to it.

Get your IP, type it into the URL bar and it should bring up your router. Check all the settings are correct. If need be try to open a port to allow connections to arrive from outside sources. That might help.

Other than that just try rebooting the router, make sure everything is labeled correctly and make sure that the source you are trying to get a connection from is allowing you to connect (i.e. no firewall stopping the connection).
