In 20 years of formal education I've never once had a single summer assignment, a single piece of summer reading, or really anything whatsoever connected to school to do during the summer ever.

Is this a US thing? Everyone keeps talking about summer schoolwork, are you actually in "Summer School"? Or is this just a standard part of your education?

I never had a summer assignment as well.

Well I did have one between Grade 2/Grade 3, but it was optional and all you had to do is fill up your journal on your summer holidays. If you do it, you get a free lollipop .

But I didn't do it.

I'm not in summer school. The academy that I'm in assigns work every summer (even the summer before your freshman year). Normally we have work for 2-3 classes, and we have to turn in the work on the first day of school, followed by a test sometime in the first week.

Dude, most of them haven't even hit puberty, they haven't hit super hot status yet.

I start high school on the 2nd. Yay for grade 9 freshmen year!

I might start at the end of September. I'm taking online classes from Berklee College of Music (Boston, not UC Berkeley) right now. Great music production classes. I'm trying to get my book finished, so I'm not sure when I'll be done and able to continue with school.

Summer homework is part of our education. It is mandatory, and in my case, is handed in on the first day of school the succeeding school year. Japan involves writing papers, doing many worksheets, and doing free-research assignments. NY involves historical research papers, and reading novels.

Summer school is different, an unnecessary form of summertime education only mandatory for the people who failed any course (year-wise). I never had to go to one, so I don't know what it is content-wise either.

Uhm. Summer homework isn't mandatory everywhere. It's decided by state government. Currently, in minnesota, we're running on the schools choice. Which means my school is lazy and doesn't want to grade homework the day we get back..

Although.. I was -supposed- to practice a solo for band, but that's not til spring and my instrument is dead. So i'll just make some lame excuse to my band director. He won't even care, the guy loves me so much.. -shudders-

Haha. Still, only 2 years left of High School.. And it's only because you guys don't have a sophomore year.

But it doesn't really matter, same year of schooling, just different names.

Yea anyways, what sucks is that 11-12 have the same teams, so I'm not trying out for anything other than tennis and badminton. if I try out for basketball I'd have to play with the 12th graders and really don't feel like doing that since they're intense at basketball.



PS, something awesome is that I graduate at 17 years old hehe. /late birthday, sept.

Wow. Sports teams are different there. We've got varsity and junior varsity. Generally, varsity is seniors, with the exception of amazing players. And junior varsity is.. well.. Juniors.

And here, sept. wouldn't be considered a late birthday, I know some people who were born in october. They're turning 17 already.

And as for me.. I'll be 18 for a little less than 2 months when I graduate.

I start on September 2nd and my birthday will only be a few days after...in grade 5 my birthday was the first day of school. I'm actually really looking forward to going to school. I don't really have a lot of local friends as I go to a private school so all my friends live 20+ minutes away and my parents don't really care to drive me and my friends think Georgetown is like 40-50 minutes away as Georgetown has always been a butt of a joke. I also like the courses I'm taking next year.

- Programming in BASIC and C++
- Programming in HTML and Java
- Calculus
- Advanced Functions and Vectors
- World Issues

On top of that I have to take English and...Christian Ed which has a unit on demons and evil spirits this year...help me...for the love of god...help me. I'm really going to enjoy my course load this year though.
