So I need a little help here. I just bought a new HP after my 6 month old Dell's motherboard fried. So I tried installing iTunes but it keeps popping up with "Mobile Device Helper" failed. I don't know how to fix it and it's really bugging me because I have a ton of new music I want to put on my ipod that I just bought at Warped Tour.

Re: New Computer issues
Well here is the issue. I can't find any copies of XP around my area and I have heard a lot of stories about how it screws up your computer if you downgrade. And the pea mocks me.

Do you currently have anything valuable on your computer? If not I can help you through the process. There are a few things I would need to know about your computer first though.Comment

Re: New Computer issues
Also, if you don't want to downgrade for whatever reason, let me suggest using WinAmp. I know if works with Vista because one of my good friends uses it and he gets by on Vista Home Basic with 1GB of ram (somehow). They have a free version available which is really all you need.
But, XP I believe is overall still a better OS than Vista, so I'd still suggest downgrading if you're brave enough, and since Zageron is willing to help, what have you got to lose?

Re: New Computer issues
Whoa, whoa, what is all this talk? I hate sounding imperious and like a know-it-all, but sometimes you guys don't leave me much choice since your misleading or misinformed replies drive me insane.
No, don't buy a copy of XP and downgrade. That's a ridiculous solution to a problem with a single application. I'm using Vista on my laptop right now, and it's working with everything just fine, including iTunes. Not to mention that iTunes is Vista compatible. And downloading Winamp will not fix the problem of difficulties using iTunes functions. Winamp is a media player and does not interface with an iPod.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but I would suggest googling and asking at knowledgable support forums, or using the support your manufacturer is supposed to provide. If you want to ask at forums, go to tomshardware.com/forum and ask there. Their forums have a bunch of knowledgable users. I wouldn't recommend asking about computer issues here.
I swear, the situation usually goes like this:
OP: My computer won't turn on.
FFR User: OMG your motherboard is dead. Go buy a new computer.
OP: But my car won't start.
FFR User: Then buy a new car.
OP: But I'm crippled and can't move.
FFR User: Then grow a new set of legs.
...when the original problem was that the computer's power cable simply wasn't plugged in.
Shame on you for trying to ram an XP downgrade down the unknowledgeable user's throat at possible risk to their data simply based on your biased and baseless opinion in favor of XP. And don't tell me how bad Vista is, I'm using both XP and Vista and as part of the computer building business I own have built many systems with all sorts of configurations and operating systems.
The question is, do you really have the desire to help the OP? Because I don't see what you're doing as help. It's a completely unnecessary risk. And I hate to sound high-and-mighty, but if you want to make such HIGH recommendations using CAPITALS as if you are some sort of AUTHORITY, I would suggest you get some sort of clue on what you're talking about.
EDIT: I've googled around a bit, and users have found a variety of reasons the problem existed. Many posts in forums also indicate that other users use iTunes in Vista and have no problems whatsoever.
Check around, ask questions, and for god's sake, don't reformat or reinstall windows or downgrade. You're trying to do brain surgery with a pipe wrench, and it's not going to work.Last edited by OrganisM; 07-27-2008, 04:03 AM..

Re: New Computer issues
I love Vista haters.
Have you, you know, used it?
I'm four years into my University studies in the field of Information Technology and I've used computers since I was four. That's eighteen years for those who can't do math. I have Vista. There's absolutely nothing with Vista that is worse than XP. Just shut up as you have no idea what you're talking about.
Now, the problem on your end is Apple. Apple sucks and they hate everything that isn't Apple. You're trying to make a PC work with an Apple product. That's the error.
There are dozens of freeware programs that will accomplish the same thing as iTunes in terms of getting songs onto an iPod without the hassle and bloatware that comes with iTunes.
While iTunes is a powerful application, it does have its limitations, mostly stemming from both Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions and the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) ...
If you're seriously set on iTunes though...

For most computer problems, just Google the error message. You'll get what you need.
And all of you idiots in this thread who recommended downloading XP, don't do it again. Downloading Windows is illegal. AKA, against forum rules to discuss such things. When someone wants support for their problem, give them support, not retarded "workarounds" that only inconvenience them further. You know how much of a hassle it is to reformat everything and install XP RIGHT AFTER you JUST got your new computer up and running? But noooooooooooooooooo, tell everyone your highly valued opinions on why Vista sucks without actually helping anyone fix their problem.Last edited by Squeek; 07-27-2008, 03:57 AM.Comment

Who said anything about Buying XP, and who said anything about loosing Data?
XP is no longer on the shelves. Or won't be for long. So you can't buy it anyways.Comment

Re: New Computer issues
Another thing when talking about Vista is differentiating between the 64 bit and 32 bit versions. From what I understand, the 32 bit version is more compatible and doesn't have nearly as many problems as the 64 bit version.
My own experiences with 64 bit Vista seem to corroborate what I've heard, as well. I haven't used 32 bit Vista so I can't speak for it. When using my father's 64 bit Vista computer, I've experienced a wealth of incompatibility issues, as well as many "errors" which seem to have no effect whatsoever, but the computer simply -has- to fix, taking up resources and time. However, this was all pre-SP1, and I haven't tried it since my father installed it (about a month ago).Comment
