My E-Mail to them:
I, being a "hardcore gamer" and high school student, am appalled by your website (www.mavav.org). I am always against people who believe that they know what's best for others, especially when concerning violence in media and videogames, but I object especially to your website wherein you use lies and false information to attempt to bring other parents, generally those less knowledgable on issues of computers and games, to your way of thinking.
For a moment, I'd like to simply quote a few of your "facts".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" Health studies have found that even those casual gamers suffer from low self-esteem and self-pride compared to their athletic and more socially accepted peers in their same age group. Young gamers were found to be more likely to become lifetime gaming addicts and becoming social outcasts. "
That's funny, in a horrendously over-generalized way. I and many of my friends play videogames regularly, and yet we aren't "social outcasts" and we are no less "accepted" by our "athletic" peers. That part alone is completely baseless, since gaming and athletics can and do easily co-exist.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hardcore gamers never buy computer videogames. Instead, downloading illegally copied videogames or “warez” is the only method acceptable by the underground. Buying a legit copy is grounds for abandonment by community groups."
First of all, you don't even say that some people do this, which is true, but you say that ALL gamers do this. Well, I'm glad you can keep me informed on the warez community, what with you being concerned mothers and all. Where exactly did you get this information? Or is it just another assumption that you made trying to brainwash other people into believing in your cause?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"A typical report card by a troubled videogame player: (reported grades)"
That's an interesting statistic, because it seems to me that not only do I get all A's in honors and AP classes that most adults have never even taken, but I also develop hand eye coordination, reaction time, logic and mathematical skills from the time I spend on the computer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Do videogames make people violent?
Yes. What was once a debatable question, is now fact. New research has concluded that videogame violence and behavior related violence are in fact closely related. "
I'd like to see this research, becasue you'd think that such a finding would be big news and not only printed on a blatently anti-gaming website.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" Do videogames teach people how to kill?
Yes. When videogames were linked to the Columbine high school shooters, a frenzy of new research was launched, in which, one team of researchers discovered that first person shooter games do indeed teach gamers with the basic knowledge of how to kill. This research arrived be so conclusive that the U.S. government Army developed a free videogame to be used as a virtual boot camp and killing simulator."
Anyone who takes what they see in a videogame and act on it or uses any knowledge gained to try to kill somebody clearly has deeper problems than videogames. Perhaps they have problems relating to a radically conservative upbringing because they were so sheltered during their childhood.
I wonder then, how you can present this fraudulent information and expect to be taken seriously, and then I realize that you can't be. That is why videogames remain, as "violent" as ever. That is why your cause never gathers enough support. People aren't stupid enough to be taken in by your lies. That allows me to rest assured that I will be able to continue gaming long into the future.

my letter: could have been better, but i was in a rush to do it
dearest MAVAV,
i appreciate how much you have done for my family. Originally, i thought the marijauna that my son Billy had been doing for the past few weeks was the cause of his grades dropping. Thankfully, i have come to realize that your blatently thorough research has concluded that it has to be the video games my son has been playing. Obviously marijuana mustn't be detrimental, so that has been allowed again. i have now gone to a psychiatrist for counciling on Billy's sickening habit of playing computer games. Acupuncture and yoga have been recommended by at least 4 doctors. I have also given him several books to read that will lead him to be nonviolent. Hamlet and All quiet on the Western Front are what he's reading now! What a good son! At one point, i caught him on the computer for 4 entire hours...i mean- i could sew a scarf in that amount a time!! He is wasting his life away, i thought to myself. From now on, i am encouraging Billy to attend social events on the weekends. I figure as long as he is away from electronics, he will be a healthy child. What a great time Billy had last weekend! He and a bunch of his schoolmates had a jovial get-together last saturday night. You should have seen his face when he got home! And how strangely he acted--must be a sign of recovery! He must have had a grand time away from those demonic "games" as they call them. Another satisfied parent here!!
--many thanks

they said that most of the emails they get come from young children and preteenage gamers...i dont think theyll give two shits about anyone that has oppossing idealsOriginally posted by VxDxStick it in her butt and pee.Comment

As Jewpin said, if you raise your children right, they wont be playing games like that, but people don't and so kids get violent. TV is just as bad. You can't even have a 5 year old in the room when the commercials come on.Comment

i think when the parents cant raise the children right they, instead of taking some blame, find a scapegoat...in this case video games...but you see that done with tv and music all the time tooOriginally posted by VxDxStick it in her butt and pee.Comment
