computer help?

im pretty sure this goes here...
ive had my computer for a while and its slowed up ALOT since i first got it and i feel like playing kotor on it again.
besides using antivirus software what else can i do to make my computer speed up?

Disk Cleanup. Remove Programs. Disable all Windows Sound effects. No Windows effects. No Quick Launch bar.
Disable Services. Disable Processes. Get more memory. Get a bigger Hard drive. Get a faster processor. Clear your Desktop.

Defragment your hard drive.

Go to Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Defragmenter

Hit the "Defragment" button and wait. Defragmenting puts separated files back together on the hard drive so that the computer doesn't have to go all over the hard drive looking for everything inside it.

You can get rid of unnecessary programs by going into Control Panel-->Add and Remove Programs. Delete all the stuff you don't need or use anymore.

On that note, if you want to purge your computer of all the useless stuff, reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows. This erases your hard drive so that you can start from scratch and redownload everything you need to get. You can look elsewhere for how to reformat, since I've only had to do it once. You would be better off finding out how from someone else.

Yeah, you'll need about 15% free. This is because the defragmenter needs that space to keep files temporarily before moving them back to where they need to be.

Just delete all the useless stuff you don't need and you should get that 15% pretty easily.

What Operating System do you run?
What's your Processor speed?
How much Ram do you have?
What Video card do you have?
How many GB does your HDD have, and how much space is left on it?
Is your Desktop cluttered?

Example on info for the above:
Windows XP Pro
3.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Processor
1Gig of Ram
Radeon X800XT 256mb
200GB HDD with 50GB Free Space
Only icon on the Desktop is the Recycle Bin

3 Programs I recommend: They will help clean up your computer.
CCleaner
Ad-aware
Spybot

Also if you want, you can check how hard your computer is running by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and clicking on Performance. Your Physical memory is your Ram, and your CPU usage is how hard your Processor is running at the moment.

Run CCleaner. Just check everything under cleaner and issues and purge all of it. You should run about 5x faster.

Adaware is what I use... It works fairly well, but if you're running a really good computer, I'd suggest something a little better such as spyware doctor.

Otherwise-- Don't download tuns of junk online, clear your cache... Whatever else you might think of.

The main thing other than unclogging your computer data-wise is making sure you have less processes running in the background.

And KOTOR's system requirements are pretty low.

I'd be careful about doing this. Novices working with the registry at all can cause very bad things to happen.
