who thought getting into college would **** stuff up

    LJ repost hehe

So I got accepted into the University of Maryland last week. I live in Maryland, and I've always been a Maryland sports fan, but because I had all but committed to Penn State I just saw it as a good thing, but not something that I'd probably consider. I wasn't expecting to get into Maryland, MUCH LESS Fall 2007 semester.

But the more I weigh it the more that I start to seriously become torn. On one side, theres Penn State. Beautiful campus, good distance away from my parents (about 3 to 4 hours), and a program that when I went to visit PSU just absolutely blew me away. I got my grandfather to pull some strings to ensure I'd get in to PSU. For a while, it looked like the place I'd spend my 4 years.

However, on the other side theres Maryland. I haven't visited the campus yet, but my parents have taken me on mini-tours whenever we go to Maryland basketball games, and I've always thought that the campus looked great. It's got some programs that I like, it's about 45 minutes away from home, and it's WAY cheaper than PSU due to the fact that because I live in Maryland, I'd get in-state tuition.

Now here's where the battle begins in my head. Penn State has the program (the Security and Risk Analysis program) that averages 56k out of college with 98% getting a job right out of college. I absolutely loved the program when I went to visit the campus and I thought that it was just a great opportunity for me to maybe go into the FBI as a computer guy. However, what happens if I get to Penn State, take a few of the introductory classes to the major, and decide I don't like the program? I'd be stuck as an undecided in Penn State, when I could be doing that at Maryland, except it would be 12k cheaper a YEAR. Couple with the fact that my father has offered me $10,000 ON THE SPOT if I decide to go to Maryland. It would be foolish for me to decide to abandon the long term just for $10,000, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that it's going to be a factor in my decision.

It's really a choice between whether I want to risk my happiness and stay in a program that will virtually guarantee a pretty comfortable life or whether I want to play it safe, go in undecided at a very good and less expensive college close to home, and not worry about having spending money in college.

And to think that if I didn't work my ass off to write an exceptional essay (two of my friends with better grades wrote crappier essays and got deferred admission into spring 2007-08 semester) I wouldn't be having a very intense personal battle about where I'm going to get the most important education I could possibly get.

    Who knew.

Maybe I missed it, but what would you be studying at Maryland? Both seem like good choices for you and there really is no super clear choice of which to pick. Just go with the one that you feel is right. or flip a coin.

If I go to Maryland, it'd probably be computer security or criminology.

Don't surrender your happiness for a little knowledge, and a few green slips of paper. Who cares if you get a good income. If you don't like the program at Penn, you're not going to be as well off in BOTH the short run, and the long run.

Go to Maryland, and you at least get 10,000 dollars, which would last you a while in terms of school supplies. Plus, you save a S***load on tuition in Maryland.

My reccomendation: Maryland is the better way to go, at least by what your post says. However, do what you think you will be HAPPIER in.

          Come visit me at Maryland

I think we have the #1 criminal justice program in the country right?

          EDIT:

The choice was between UMD and PSU for me as well, PSU is 3 1/2 hours from me, Maryland is 2 1/2. I chose Maryland for the athletics. We both have great Greek systems. PSU has prettier buildings but has 15,000 more people. The bar scene is bigger here though. The only complaint I have about Maryland is all the Mexican townies who live around the campus.

well first of all don't let cost be a reason you don't go to a school you like
but i kno the whole college thing can be a real pain
              mine was...for different reasons tho
i mean i went to culinary school...one of the top, in vegas
cost a hell of a lot to go there
              ...
              then things changed
              and yea
now im gonna be going to the university here in hawaii
              in state tuition
and even tho most ppl would think its expensive
i could alreay pay for all my schooling and it's cheap compared to what i was doing before

ok anyways...you should make a list of each with the pros and cons
and see which one would be more right for you

Check on your major courses at each place, but you'll probably get the same education either way. Like everyone else is saying, go where you enjoy.

                  Come to the Big 10!

Honestly though, it seems like Maryland would be the better choice. You'd be saving a ton of money, and it's close to home. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's nice to be closer to home. I wouldn't worry about your salary after you graduate that much. Just graduating from the program doesn't guarantee you anything.

Even if you don't like the intro classes at Penn State though, the majority of college students switch their major at least once. I have a couple friends that do go to Penn State, and they both say it's amazing there. If you do decide to go to PSU though, you'll a chance to see Michigan, Wisconsin and of course Ohio State play in the fall.

while i agree with shox, i think you should go to UMD for the cheapness factor.

                    for two reasons:

                    1. almost all college students change their major at LEAST once. i have changed it like 3 times now.

                    2. you can transfer if you DO decide that the criminology thing is what you're into.

                    oh plus $$$$$$$

seriously, getting some classes in for cheaper at UMD while you make sure that's what you want to spend the rest of your life doing isnt gonna kill you.

seems to me the smartest decision.

This is why I'm glad I only applied to two universities and only got accepted into one.

I say Maryland as well. I mean, if you're looking into getting Federal work, better get used to the state where it all takes place, right?

Also, I wouldn't look at your current situation as a bad thing, as your title suggests. You really are in a perfect situation. Both places have a ton of positive aspects to them, and I'm sure pros easily outweigh the cons in both colleges too.

Obviously you're really going to have to think about this seriously, because this is a really big decision, but it's not the end all be all. I'm sure you would enjoy yourself at both places, and I wouldn't stress out too much. You are in a really good situation. Take your time, think about it, and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.
