While talking with Zakon on msn, we discussed somethin very interesting to me. When in space with no gravity at all, if you had a small prepulsion, for a crude example, a fart, you would propel yourself forward right? Well, if enough farts, you would continue gaining speed. Would your speed diminish? Or say a sneeze, they travel at 99 mph or something right? So, say you wouldn't be horribly mutilated, but if you kept going, could you reach light speed? (Remember now, you're not counting th horrible mutilation factor.)
Does anyone know?

Well assuming you kept on farting at continually stronger speeds, theoretically I guess you could reach the speed of light. But as we don't have huge, giant rockets that can come anywhere close to that...and you'd aphixiate in under 30 seconds in the vacuum of space...and nobody can fart that hard, not even Terrance and Phillip...no. -
No, you couldn't.
because even in the vacuum of space, there are still tiny particles that cause friction, which would slow you down, and your terminal velocity wouldn't be able to break the speed of light..
Theoretically, though, if you could get an entirely frictionless environment, it could work.Originally posted by Henri PoincaréThe scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. no theres nothing to stop you so without certain rules yo could, but due to the laws of motion one force can only push so far and once the peak velocity is reached (i.e your fart pushes you at a small speed) they wont cumulativly colect to light speedComment
-
Yes, yes, yes but how could you fart to propel yourself if your whole body is in a spacesuit???
it can't. therefore question solved
but you farted in space and you weren't wearing a spacesuit would it make a smell or noise
wait nevermind noise, yeah, yeah the whole vacumm of space thing

are you sure that's true?
I'm not trying to be an ass, but I'm just not sure; I remember doing problems in Physics class that had a force pushing an object backwards because of the same type of thing multiple times, and it went farther. But then again, I don't know if that means going any faster, or if in the problem, the object went any faster, or even if I understand what you mean...
I don't know...Originally posted by Henri PoincaréThe scientist does not study nature because it is useful to do so. He studies it because he takes pleasure in it, and he takes pleasure in it because it is beautiful.Comment

no nothing travels at the speed of light besides light...i mean think about it, comets and such that get shot like rockets by the suns gravity never reach nearly the speed of lightOriginally posted by VxDxStick it in her butt and pee.Comment

a fart? thats not even enough force to push you lol.
and no....its just not strong enough. you will not reach the speed of light. you will not even gain speed.
you can't reach the speed of light anyway.
as you approach the speed of light, time elapses faster.
technically you'd travel foward in time, if you were an object of mass....
having mass and reaching that speed is basically impossible anyway. if I recall light travels around 184,000 MPS.....you'd crash into something....unless you could gain the speed quickly...like....using a vacuum of some sort.

a agree. if you have ever been farted on, you would know that farts posess the amount of energy as a 4 year old blowing out a birthday candle. if you could get your farts together and control when they exit, and maybe be on a skateboard, im sure you would get some movement.Comment

Lol we're trying to be all serious and have real input when we're actually talking about how fast you could fart yourself...anyone else see the surreality of it?Comment

There is a formula that proves that anything with mass will never ever beable to reach light speed. But it's just a theory one. I can't remember it, but something involving halfs.It\'s not the size of the wand that counts, it\'s the magic in the stick!Comment

um.. i would have to agree.. with no friction in space.. and a clear shot.. Yes.. you will reach light speed.. Inertia..Newtons first law of motion.. an object in motion will remain in motion until acted upon by an outside force..
Mathametically...
Hypothetically speaking.. if you were able to prpoel your body at 99mph per sneeze (which you can't)
99mph you need to get that to mps(miles per second) so you divide by 60.. then again by 60... that gives you .0275 mps.. the speed of light is 186000 mps.. so adding .0275 to your speed per sneeze, you would need to sneeze 6,763,636 times to reach light speed.. it owuld take you a little over 1 year to reach that speed.. sneezing once every 5 seconds..
Now all this is considering you dont run into anything.. and dont die of starvation or suffication.. and you could find away to sneeze in space..

Isn't it the faster you go, the slower time goes?
I just want to make sure....

In space let's just the fact that "it" can't happen too many technicalities.
but, if you were somehow able to go into a frictionless enviroment, I am sure it is entirely possible
