Well i understand the percentiles, but how do they actually configure a "540" on a section?

Yea I'm not sure how they actually give you a '2390'. Is that like 1 question wrong? XD If it's just based on percentile score than you don't even need to get every question right to ace the test. That also means as your score gets closer to 2400 each question right would be worth more points. I don't think they would do that, so it's probably not based on percentile score.

Getting a perfect SAT score requires both 1. Tons of study and 2. Angels up your butt. Noone gets a teriffic score without luck. A lot of times questions come down to guesses. IF I wanted to keep trying for a lucky run at the SAT for a 2400, which some people do, I could do that. But I don't think anyone actually cares after 2200. You can get into any school and the other things on your application are more important at that point.

      PS

      Percentile Score, 1600 Scale
      (official, 2006) Score, 2400 Scale
      (official, 2006)
      99.98 1600 2400
      99.65 ≥1550 ≥2300
      99 ≥1480 ≥2200
      98 ≥1450 ≥2150
      97 ≥1420 ≥2100
      93 ≥1350 ≥2000
      88 ≥1280 ≥1900
      81 ≥1220 ≥1800
      72 ≥1150 ≥1700
      61 ≥1080 ≥1600
      48 ≥1010 ≥1500
      36 ≥950 ≥1400
      15 ≥800 ≥1200
      4 ≥660 ≥1000
      1 ≥530 ≥800

The old sat had a ridiculous ceiling; 1600 99.999 %

So, the percentile is not like a percentage-score grade, correct? i.e, a 72 percentile doesn't mean i got a 72 on the test, right? If so, that's booboo.

I always saw the percentile as how well you did compared to other students. 72% means i did better than 72% of the other students in the nation, right?

I'm trying to understand this more fully. I still don't know how they get a score though. How do they configure the variables needed to formulate a composite score? I don't mean math+reading, that's obvious...I mean the 530 I got on reading. There sure as hell wasn't 530 questions. Explain Reach. Explain!!

              100% on everything.

              86% on math.

rofl 1610 my very first time. I ended getting 560 on Writing and English and a 490 on Math. My essay was a 9/12. If Math wasn't so fscking gay, I would've had a higher score. =P

I need to take this test. I scored better than every kid in my school (99th percentile in the US) on one practice test thing, so I've got some confidence that at least I'll do above average. Not looking forward to writing an essay, though. Something I just can't do. =\

I got an 18 on my Plan ACT lol. But it was out of 32 so i could get as high as 22-23 on the actual ACT. Except i'm not stupid, so i'm gonna study when the time comes.

In truth, I had a much better time with my SAT2s than the good ol 2400. The curving on the math C test made it cake with a beautiful cherry on top. 800, easy.

1230 in the 8th grade, 1450 when I took it for real. Not nearly enough of a jump imo >_>
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

What is the consensus on the ACT vs SAT?

I'm going to take the ACT at least once regardless, but I was wondering how most of you feel about it.

I took both just in case one score really blowed, the other one could back it up. Technically, the ACT is a little bit easier than the SAT as far as complexity and difficulty of questions. Only downside is the ACT's sections are longer, some containing about 60-70 questions while the SAT's max is 35. Don't be fooled though, theres about 10 sections on the SAT while theres only about 4 or 5 on the ACT, so the time length is nearly the same. The essay portion for the ACT (if you decide to take it) has a somewhat easier prompt and is more practical for a college essay. My prompt from the December ACT essay was about homework, and if it should be assigned to students.

I'd say the ACT is easier. Conversions from ACT to SAT usually inflate SAT scores. Which is a good thing...!

dancingmaniac3, I can't explain, because I don't know. What I was saying was that I don't think the scores are based purely on percentile. It wouldn't make sense because you would get what is called the 'ceiling effect' (a common problem on IQ tests)...which essentially means scores start to increase exponentially for each question you answer correctly as you approach the highest possible score on the test. There are measures to counter a ceiling effect, but it's easier to give raw scores for grades, because it would cause oodles of other problems due to the structure of the system.

So there must be some sort of linear grading system to keep it fair, IE questions have certain values.

                                Edit from College Board:

First, a raw score is calculated: one point is added for each multiple-choice question answered correctly. Omitted questions receive no points. For multiple-choice questions answered incorrectly, 1/4 point is subtracted. No points are subtracted for incorrect answers to the SAT math questions requiring student-produced responses. Questions in the SAT equating section do not count toward the score. Then, the total points answered wrong are subtracted from the number answered correctly. If the resulting score is a fraction, it is rounded to the nearest whole number -- 1/2 or more is rounded up; less than 1/2 is rounded down.

Next, the raw score is converted to the College Board 200-to-800 scaled score by a statistical process called equating. Equating adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test editions, and ensures that a student's score on one edition of a test reflects the same ability as a score of 450 on another edition of the test and that a student's score does not depend on how well others did on the same edition of the test.
