Personally, I use Trillian on my Windows desktop and Gaim on my Gentoo laptop.
WINNER!!!
Edit: Is it generally recommended to install linux on a laptop? I'm pretty much sick and tired of running Winblows on my Dell laptop (yes, much to my chagrin, I bought a Dell laptop), but the media buttons might not work with Linux.
If you want to try something new, that might be a good idea. You should be able to use the media buttons with a configuration script that maps buttons at startup or something. What model is it?

Dell Inspiron E1405, probably the only one which wasn't recalled lol.
I tried installing Gentoo on my desktop and eventually was 0 for 4 attempts. On the first try I accidentally wiped my main hard drive's MBR so I had to reinstall Windows. On the second try with the minimal CLI installer GRUB looked really weird and it couldn't mount. I finally got tired and tried using the Live CD's GUI installer but it would always cut me off at some point during the final emerge.
EDIT: I do have a working knowledge of linux but I finally got tired of using Ubuntu.
