    Laptop Go DIE?

So... I went away from my computer to shower, and when I came back, it kept flashing this message:

For Realtek RTL8110S/8116 (I do not remember the numbers exactly) PCI Fast Ethernet Controller
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

and there was a sound coming from it that sounded similar to a die being rolled.

I checked google on how to fix it, and it said something about going into BIOS and changing the boot order. I have no idea how to do that. I can get into safe mode. I could use some step by step assistance from there. And I'd rather not have a laptop than reformat it. My new desktop is due in any day, and I NEED the 40+ gigs on the laptop's HD.

no... I was in the shower... and I doubt Whorli did either.

Also, I messed around with the boot settings (figured out how to do it), and when I de-activated booting from the Network, it just flashed "Operating System not found".

So... wtf. Seriously. And, why did it have to happen in the 10 minutes I was in the shower.

Did my HD crash? Did just XP?

So you can't log into XP at all? It just dies in the Bios? From that error message, it seemed liek your Ethernet Card got effed up.

          Re: Laptop Go DIE?

that was my first impression... given it says "Ethernet Controller". But, then why can I not access the rest of my computer? When I don't boot to the network, it says I have no OS.

So, yea... I am not reaching XP. It dies before that.

            Re: Laptop Go DIE?

My laptop has this error but it doesn't do anything.

I always wondered what it was, but since my sound is fine and I have noticed nothing wrong since the day I got it, I didn't care.

Therefore, it's a problem that varies by your hardware specs.

            Good luck.

              Hmm.

That doesn't sound very good then. I don't know what else to suggest, other than if you had an XP CD, you could try to repair the problem.

Anyways, restore your bios settings to default and see what happens, other than that, I don't know : \

Never messed with them before today... so they were at default to begin with.

Well anyway, I looked into it myself.

To get into Bios, basically mash F2, F8, etc as the computer is starting up. It's one of these keys and it varies for every manufacturer because who would want consistency gosh.

There will be menus on the left for all the various things you can change for hardware preferences. All you really have to do is turn off stuff you know you don't have. That should do it.

                      Keep us updated.

Anyway you can retrieve the HDD from your lappy and put it into the comp you are using currently, to back the files up.

                          Re: Laptop Go DIE?

Laptops cannot be opened like that TPS. Everything in a laptop is configured for a laptop. It's not easy taking things out of a laptop for ANY reason, which is why they suck. It's very rare for a laptop to even be expandable.

At least this problem is easier than what I had. Yay for partitions deciding they want to change file formats to ... nothing! NTFS sucks apparently.

                            Re: Laptop Go DIE?

I figured out how to get into the BIOS... and I turned off 2 different boots spereately... neither allowed me to get on. Turned off the network and the cd-rom.

I'm going to go with my time tested approach, which has fixed issues in the past... go to sleep and test it out tomorrow. Perhaps it will magically fix itself the same way it magically killed itself when I left it alone for 10 minutes, despite it doing nothing when I left it on and alone for 25 days while in Europe.

I really don't even care if I can get the laptop working again, because of the desktop. I just need the stuff on it... I wonder if I can boot into safe mode and then burn stuff onto DVDs from there.

EDIT: But if anyone else has some HELPFUL advice, I am all ears.

                              Laptops < Desktop.

                              I hate my laptop.

I had that error before. We took it to the guy at rentway and he just like F11'd it or something. Idk but I had nothing on my hard drive. Piss me off.
