I think I would only have taken a year off after high school if I had some huge, life-changing activity to perform in that year. A friend of mine would have graduated the same year as I, but he transferred to some highschool in New Mexico where he took an extra year of classes that was essentially his freshman year in college, then he took off to Thailand for a year to teach percussion or.. English... or something. I never knew why he was there except that he was teaching something. Anyway, now he's in college and got huge scholarship offers, undoubtedly as a result of his post-high school activities.
Meh I got a good year before I go to college. Next school year is gonna be hell trying to get accepted and all that jazz. I hope to be a freshman by next fall. I will however be taking a break off for the summer to go to Japan. =P
Also, it would probably get really boring after a while, with nothing to do except work.
WRONG. So so wrong. I took this summer off (I was planning on taking summer classes every year, because it makes it easier to deal with if I only have 2 or 3 science classes in a semester as opposed to 4 or 5) because I was too burned out...and only having to work is so exhilarating.
I have so much more free time, and being able to come home and not have homework to do, or reading for the next day, or a project...it's so FREEING. I feel like I'm the queen of the world.
Plus Tass is going away, so I'll have the house (mostly) to myself and FULL control of the remote.

True. I was looking at it from the point of view that maybe all or most of his friends would be leaving for college, and that it would get boring that way. For me, I couldn't just work and have that be it. If I stayed home, I'd be the only one left, because everyone left for college. Then again, I'm just a freshman in college, and I'm not burnt out from school. Just depends on what type of person you are.
The secret to your future lies hidden in your daily routine.
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment.
Whorli is finished with 4 years of college plus at least 2 summer sessions. She still has a long way to go. So, yea... I was burned out after 3 years, but forced myself to finish in 4.
Completely different story if you are just getting out of HS. I played poker with a guy who was taking a year off after HS (this past year) before going to UPenn next year... and he had fun and all, but it just seemed pretty boring. He didn't really do anything.
I was seriously thinking of joining the Peace Corps after I graduate high school, but they require an 18 month minimum committment, which I think would make me take 2 years off instead of one. Plus I wouldn't actually net a teaching job because I don't have a degree in anything. And you have to be a US citizen, too.
