Ok, so I've gotten myself into one of those "pickles", although I'm not entirely sure how bad it will be.

I may have signed up for an intramural hockey team, and I may have said I want to be the goalie, and this may be because I really don't know how to ice skate. Like I can go forwards and turn, but that's about it. So hey guys, anyone play hockey? Do I have any shot of not looking retarded? I'm sure I can be fine goalie, and I assume skating is a minimum from that position?

This is why I always cower in fear when the intramural chairs in my sorority stand up and say they need ONE MORE GIRL for some sport I don't know how to play and then seem to look RIGHT AT ME.

Uhh, goallie's need to have the most skating ability, cause they do some fancy footwork while taking someone on (e.g. breakaway) or just shooting across the other side of the net.

But what do I know? I haven't played hockey in 3 years

also I figured
A) goalies don't really have to skate backwards too much except fro when i leave the net and a breakaway the other way develops (soln, i'm not leaving the net)

B) goalies are supposed to fall, it will mask when I fall, plus I have the net to support me

Man, I'd almost come up to Brown just to see the hilarity that will be your first game. I demand to know the score after it happens and how fast they pull your ass... Only benefit is you're at an Ivy school, so chances are the guys aren't that good. But who knows. I'd be surprised if you have a 75% save percentage.

I'm with you, Tass, except that if I lived where you did, I probably would go see it.

If you can learn how to skate backward, you'll probably be fine. But it'll be quite embarassing if you glide out in front of the net and have to turn around to get back in position while the opposition scores on you while your back's turned.

Man, I just got reminded of the time I had to play goalie on my intramural soccer team. That was atrocious.

You should play a little farther out so that they are coming up on one side they don't have as many options of where to shoot it, that way it can only go between you (in the middle) and the edge of the net, cutting the area to score in half and giving you a better chance at saving it.

But oh well.

You don't plan on gliding out; it's just something that happens when you're without considerable friction. Especially if you're leaning forward like goalies are wont to do.
