I have been playing saxophone for five intensive years in high school. by intensive I mean everyday for two hours at least. I can play Baritone, tenor and alto saxophone but alto is my best. I didnt win many awards or anything but I always played very chanllenging pieces, thats why I got pretty good really fast. I played in an harmonie, a marching and a jazz band at the same time. It was really hard for a while because I was running out of time to practice. For now I am taking a break because of CEGEP(for all of you who do not know in montreal CEGEP comes after 5 years of high school before universtity). My sites for the future is to get back in shape and play in some sort of orchestra.Comment

Re: RE: Musical Instruments?
I play Flute, for most styles of music, Alto Sax. for Jazz... which is my love! So much, I ended up directing an 8th and 9th grade stage band for two years.Originally posted by magister_negi_magiTenor Saxophone. I'm in a crappy marching band, but I LOVE the jazz band I'm in.
Played flute because I wanted to play band, but that was the only instrument my parents had. Picked up Alto Sax, because I was going into a beginner band, but wanted something different (It was my 4th year playing flute... beginner bands with that got WAY too boring) In the future, I might take the directing skills I learnt and just start up a community band, just for fun.
Thx Completelyincomplete for the sig ^^

piano. definitely. playing it for about....5 years actual lessons, and 2 other years just fooling around playing chopsticks and twinkle twinkle little star. now i can play ADVANCED chopsticks, but nobody knows what i mean by that. its just a little added part that basically changes the song but gives the same feel of melody.Comment

RE: Re: RE: Musical Instruments?
I play the flute during concert season and the piccolo during marching season. I think I've always wanted to play the flute because that was the instrument my band teacher said I would never be able to play because of my tear drop lip. I proved her wrong though and ended up being 1st chair for my 3 years in middle school. Then in high school I started out in marching band playing the piccolo, if you don't know what that is it's the most annoying instrument (high pitched) in the world.
Being in band is the one thing that I look forward to when waking up in the morning, because band is 1st hour (7:30) so it wakes me up. I honestly don't know what I would do if I had to give up my flute, I'm thinking I'm going to have to however, because being a nurse is something that doesn't require anything with music.Comment

I know, thats what i always think about.Originally posted by jujo07I honestly don't know what I would do if I had to give up my flute, I'm thinking I'm going to have to however, because being a nurse is something that doesn't require anything with music.
But then I talked to my mom about it, and we came up with an idea!
Why not continue on with your profession, and then give out lessons to beginner or intermediate players to the side during the hours that you are free?
That way you get to keep playing, you get to teach others, and you get to do your job
It works.
Try a music store that sells beginner books, or intermediate if you pick things up easily. That way it will teach you the correct places your fingers should be, and the positions of your hands.Originally posted by chardishAnyone know a good way to get started and teach yourself? My computer hates me.

I voted brass/winds because I've played French horn for 8-ish years, but I also sort of play bass guitar.
It's important to mention that French horn > all other instruments.

I play the viola, I have been for five years in the school orchestra.
I get really mad at myself sometimes because I am better than the rest of the violas, and probably should've played violin....
(viola gets no interesting parts, or hard parts :<)
