Re: I'm going in for surgery

I didn't even know about it prior to surgery and we didn't discuss it at all.

We're going in to take a look at 3pm today. The entire bottom part of my jaw was frozen from local anesthetics when I came out of surgery. Over 24 hours, the freezing dramatically decreased, but it slowed down to a halt in a certain zone between my chin & my lips.

still feels like there's some local anesthetics or something pooled there or in effect, and hasn't stopped, some still even on top of my lip at certain parts.
kind of like all right here:

initially, I had like 2/3rds of the back of my tongue on the same side frozen as well, but that has since became unfrozen.
looked up a bit on inferior alveolar nerves, don't feel like I have any loss of sensation in my bottom teeth...

got back from the dentist, he's saying it's Paresthesia and it will wear off & recover. The bottom left wisdom tooth was sideways & impacted. It was also pressed up against the nerves during surgery, which may have caused a bit of bruising on it. The bruising should heal.

The surgeon didn't explain the side effects that could happen when performing the surgery?

        Really?

Re: I'm going in for surgery

Yeah, it's super typical. As I said, it almost always (99.9+%) heals on it's own.

He's right, it is paresthesia, due to IAN bruising. It's not possible for local anesthetic to pool in an area. To be more specific about the anatomy, the innervation to your lips and chin in the front there is from the 'mental nerve', which is basically just an extension of the inferior alveolar nerve which extends outside of the mandible (comes out of a small little foramen between your premolar).

The IAN is what gets knocked around during surgery since often time it's extremely close to the tooth you're trying to remove. That's what leads to the loss of sensation.

Anyway, don't worry about it, but it's...common practice to at least tell the patient there's a small risk of that happening because there's a small risk it can be permanent. I have a few patients that have permanent paresthesias from the procedure (not my procedure specifically). They're usually round and about the size of a dollar.

          But again, very unlikely.

He didn't, but he sure was paranoid as fuck when I came in for the follow-up - almost at the level of panicking.

Man, if your condition was permanent, man you could get a huge lawsuit on that bitch and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I think anyways. I don't know any legalese.
