Re: Oculus Rift
I don't know why people think Facebook would drive this into the ground. It's in their best interest for it to be successful and they're going to do everything in their power to get it there.
I'll admit that this might mean changes in the ultimate goal, but it could also remain true to its indie roots. There is NOTHING stopping Facebook from running this thing semi-independently and just using their new asset as a foothold to get into "serious" gaming. It could still end up being solid hardware for the PC gaming set when it gets a consumer release. Ultimately the real question will be third party software support, and that's a hard question regardless of which company is writing the checks on hardware manufacturing.
But even if Facebook DOES bungle it, that's not the end. This technology is up-and-coming, and its coming is inevitable. Oculus Rift is NOT the only face-mounted "virtual reality" unit out there. Sony's got something in development (for PS4 only? i dunno lol), and I've read a few articles about something called Avegant Glyph, something that's not EXACTLY the same thing but has similar functionality. Oculus Rift didn't invent the idea of virtual reality, they aren't the first, and they won't be the last.
