Re: Immortality and You
I think the real next step towards a ridiculous lifespan is if they can do this for a brain. There have been heart transplants for a while, but brain transplants? That doesn't even make sense really. I saw a video about a head transplant on a monkey, but that was with the brain already attached to everything inside the head. The monkey also died a few days later.Comment

Re: Immortality and You
Brains are infinitely more complicated, I'm not surprised they haven't made any progress with that. The better bet is looking into neuroprotective agents and manipulating what's already there. That stuff like optogenetics looks kind of cool. There's so many problems with achieving immortality though, it's really unfair to say that this is a catalyst for it; longer lifespan and prevention of heart diseases is awesome no doubt, but not immortal.
I see a potential issue with this... what if the brain is REALLY stimulated, and in a psychotic or panicking episode, and the heart is not beating fast enough to keep the rest of their bodily systems from overexertion/burning out... though I suppose it is very possible to have a low heartrate when that happens. My fear with this device is that somehow the brain and body would be out of sync.

Re: Immortality and You
Until they can control apoptosis or find some way of transferring memory/consciousness between brains, immortality will remain a pipe dream. Removing heart disease is a good way to prolong life but it doesn't solve the more difficult problem of cell death. Even so, lengthening a cell's lifespan seems to cause more problems than solve them.Last edited by Dynam0; 03-4-2014, 09:31 AM.Comment

So they get somebody to try this on, he gets back up again, shake hands and gets hit by a car on his way home.

Then they take the corpse to a hospital, remove the brain and put it into a new factory grown body and laugh it off the next day.Comment

Re: Immortality and You
I believe being immortal would be an eternal living nightmare. Can someone who lives forever really be considered a living being? Doesn't the definition of life imply that living beings must eventually die? I can't even imagine how lonely it would be for someone to live past countless friends and family...
Moreover, could an immortal person maintain his or her sanity when that individual becomes tired of life and tries to commit suicide numerous times, only to fail and remain alive? An eternal being would never need to engage in any of the conditions required for someone to keep living. How would someone feel if it was never necessary to eat, drink, or even breathe?
In addition, an immortal person would still theoretically feel pain, so what would happen if someone kept torturing him or her for decades without him or her dying?hi
