    D-Day, Overlord, Nromandy

I'm not sure if this thread should go in critical thinking.. but anyways.

I would just like to say that tomorrow will be the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Maybe most of you people just don't carte about it, but I think it's important to remember that 60 years ago, 156 000 soldiers where heading for Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. These soldiers were not only American but Canadian, British, French and Polish. 2 000 of those soldier died only on Omaha beach.

20 000 kilos of bombs where dropped on France in the night of June 5th. Paratroopers of the 101st and 82nd Amrican airborne division dropped on St-Mère-Église, and paratrooped infantry for the British 6th division dropped on Caen. 13 000 paratroopers where dropped, and 2 000 never made it to the ground alive.

    Thank you.

Thanks for announcing this, I was thinking about it.

It's important that we never forget this day... I mean that day.

that whole attack sucked. i'm sure there was a better way to storm France to begin with, and so many things went wrong. it's a shame that so many died for such a terrible mission, but i'm damn glad it wasnt me
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

No. It was the only way to get through the german lines on the atlatinc wall. The one in Diepp sucked realy bad, because everybody got killed. They learned a lot of things though.

there had to be another way, tho. there's always another way to do it, and there had to be a better option than storming the beachs like that. then again, i'm thinking with a different mindset. war was different back then. people were more "dispensible"...

D-day wasn't a failure, pal. I did a 15 page research paper on D-day. Omaha beach was the only beach that met any real resistance. It was a cleverly planned invasion which involved (once German) spies to relay false information to the German intelligence. A phantom invasion was planned for Calais with thousands of more soldiers than used on D-day, including inflatable tanks and other vehicles. Normandy was thought by the Germans to be a diversion. Most of the German troops were around Calais during the D-day invasion. A slow reaction time by the Germans allowed the Invasion to be successful. Luckily, the German commander refused to send troops to Normandy until they realized that it wasn't a diversion, it was the real thing.

Do be aware however, that this could very well have been a disaster. We narrowly won the battle for Normandy...if anything had gone wrong, it would have resulted in thousands of more casualties, a hasty retreat, and reinforced shorelines by the Germans. World War Two could have lasted for many more years had it not been for D-day.

Verrucker, maybe you should have done your research more carefully. There were only about 9,000 casualties, with about 3000 of those being dead soldiers. This accounts for all the beaches. There were only 2000 casualties on Omaha beach, about 700-1000 of those being deaths.

I wasen't talking about casualties on the beaches, but the ones from the paratrooped forces.

are you suggesting, then, that they dropped paratroopers on Omaha beach? That must have been an accomplishment

You're correct. Ignore everything we wrote. Every last Allied soldier died in this battle. Germany became a world power and conquered the rest of the world, dropping atomic bombs on New York city, L.A., and Chicago.

i didnt say it was a failure, just that it could have been alot better. although, it could have been alot worse, too, as u pointed out. anywho, it's obvious that u know alot more than i do about D-Day, so i'll just be shutting up

ah...well, yes, you are entitled to your opinion. Not many things actually did go wrong though. They had an unbelievably lucky break with the weather, considering it had been terrible for days. The only thing that didn't go well was the aerial sorties in certain places (Omaha beach was nearly unscathed). The fact that there were 2000 casualties on one beach isn't remarkable by itself. It's the fact that 2000 men were shot in a matter of hours.
