A friend of mine is furloughed as well and enjoys making jokes about how he makes more from unemployment than I do from a 45 hour week. I just make jokes about him being non-essential. We're good people.

As a contractor for NASA, I am directly affected by the shutdown. But while civil servants *had* to stop work, the situation is a bit different for contractors, and a lot depends on the specific contracts. In certain cases, contractors are permitted to continue working even though the federal government is shut down. In my case, I am permitted to continue working, but I have to do so off-site (which isn't a problem). But I know a bunch of civil servants who are currently forced to stay home without pay, and I suspect a bunch of contractors are in the same boat even if I personally am not.
