And yeah part of it is for the lols, in case you haven't figured it out yet. Believe it or not *GASP* many MLP fans are in it for the humorous apsects. It's not near as "serious" a fandom as many outside it would believe. Am I to assume that a large number of people simply lack a sense of humor? because that's what it's looking like.

Don't you think it's a bit ridiculous? Of course it is! That's what makes it so hilarious -- if you had a sense of humor, that is.

You'll have that with any fandom though. A good amount of fans aren't into that aspect at all. I mean just because you're a Star Wars fan (as an example -- don't know if you are or not -- if not substitute any other fandom) does that mean you jerk it to pictures of sexy chewbacca?

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, and obviously there will always be some people who take things too far, and yes those people tend to get more attention -- people who legally change their names to character names, or people who "fall in love" with the characters/etc... But I guarantee you most of the rest of the fandom (any fandom) doesn't want to have anything to do with those people anyway.

yeah but you can't deny it's there. If you want I can take pictures of bronies in my city walking around in broad daylight with pony shirts. It's not uncommon. It's also trending, and from what I've heard it's in the news too. Therefore, it's quite mainstream. There's no arguing about it, so you might want to just accept the fact, sip some tea, and get back to what you were doing.



edit: porn isn't a bad thing in fandoms. The people who are obvious about it are. Porn is big everywhere, it's just hush-hush since it's not socially acceptable.

And yes, any fandom does have some serious deviants.

And depending on what you want to consider, it may be mainstream. I just don't consider it to be so. But that could change at any time. Again, there's some subjectivity.

I'd say MLP fandom is pretty mainstream. I've seen several people at my school wearing those shirts.

"mainstream" is a matter of scope. There can be quite a few levels of hipster-dom, especially when it comes to stuff like music. It is also very region specific.

ex. Family Guy is pretty mainstream in the U.S. In China? I doubt it.

ex. Say someone likes One Direction. That's pretty mainstream I guess right?
Now let's say someone likes Nujabes. While not THAT people have heard about him, it's a pretty well known and respected artist in the hiphop genre.
Then consider someone like Hidetake Takayama. Who?

In MLP's case, I'd say that it is fairly well known (especially us internet folk), but whether or not it is well liked is a different story. People also seem to forget that MLP is a cartoon with a major targeted audience being children, who care considerably less about stuff being "mainstream". The fact that it's on CN doesn't mean that much, but once McDonalds starts making MLP toys with their kids meals, I'd say you're PROBABLY there.

ilikexd, it's not like I go around throwing ponies at people or talking about ponies 24/7 IRL. I can't even remember the last time I talked about it IRL and I don't even talk about it online much. You'll notice others generally started the discussion about it.

And yeah some things are meant to be ridiculous. The pony typing at a computer? The fact it says "User Name" on his butt? I find it to be funny anyway.

And I'll agree it is too bad there is the deviant aspect, but again that's with any fandom.
