i assume this thread only applies to music because you're an idiot if you think mainstream entertainment outside of music has little to offer (since obviously it's borderline impossible for anything involving film/television/books to even be financed and made outside the 'mainstream' establishment).
anyway willfully distancing yourself from the zeitgeist sounds self-limiting and depressing. there's plenty of merit in enjoying mainstream music (and there is an abundance of craft to seek out and appreciate there, however cynical your idea of it) for no other reason than because your enjoyment is/can be shared by millions of others, anywhere, anytime. you don't have to consider it a form of art consumption to unironically get down to some radio jams everyone knows at a house party; for chrissake it's communal, it's fun, it has mass appeal among human beings and somehow that is taken to be a pejorative nowadays

fucking thank you
Music should be seen this way, you either like it or don't like it, if it's mainstream that's okay I guess, if it's obscure who really gives a fuck.
That being said I enjoy both mainstream (GY!BE, Nightwish, Blue Stahli, Autechre, etc.) and obscure (UndaCova, Atomhead, Thomas Koner) music, I don't see how popularity is a factor to begin with
like really if you enjoy the mainstream or not who really cares, it's all fucking opinion
EDIT: Same thing applies to gaming, I enjoy playing some popular games and some obscure ones, who really cares if it's popular or not, if you think the mainstream is bad then it's an opinion, saying that it "sucks" is a subjective thing to begin with
not to mention determining if something is mainstream or obscure is also subjective, but so is everything else in the world
also the fact that people use "mainstream" as a derogatory term is pretty funny too, like there's a couple of self-proclaimed hipsters in my school who listen to Beatles and J-pop and such and when I told them that it's mainstream and they flip shit on me l0l

50% people who understand and make intelligent and relevant posts/responses.
25% people who disagree with what they think is my position but miss it entirely and argue against a strawman. (How many times do I have to state I'm not against liking what you want as long as it's really what you like? I'm not against every single mainstream thing. Do that many of you seriously have such major reading comprehension problems?)
25% derailing, flaming, etc...
Just lock it please.
Maybe hand out some bans for the derailing and flaming.
So your actual point is, don't pretend to like stuff? Cool.
Enjoyment isn't exactly a subjective physiological response, you really can't do it wrong unless you're faking it, or deluding yourself somehow (which I guess isn't really distinguishable so no less valid)
Basically like what you want as long as its what you like is some trifling fb status gibberish

That's not even close to the entirety of what was said. Other points are written, if you care to read it, then do so. But don't pretend to listen/read what has been said, and then argue against something that was never intended or implied. And if you still find the topic uninformative or boring or 'no shit stupid', then why the fuck are you posting?
That aside, to address what you are saying, what people like or pretend to like can have a lot more to it than that. Pretending to like things even though you don't is don't-be-an-outcast 101. Kids will automatically like things their parents do, and then that their classmates do. To not conform seems the more unnatural thing, it's very trained. Furthermore, that people feel that we shouldn't conform just because other people do is actually north American 'mainstream', (and has been around far longer than the term hipster.) That shit don't fly in China, and not just because of strict government and laws.
yes, that was a bitchy knee-jerk response because i didn't like UNGH's "you guys just don't get it" approach to what really, really is a simple thesis lol (yes i read the damn thread, i responded to the point i thought was worth responding to. we're all plenty aware that the corporate machine panders and is artistically limited and shouldn't dictate our music likes only by virtue of what it is). UNGH's response after my first post made me think he took it personally, that i had strawmanned him, and that annoyed me more than it should have probably
what i was trying to respond to in my first post was the idea that "it's well and good to like something that's incidentally mainstream, but not because it's mainstream. make sense?" which i thought was worth discussing, because i think there's plenty okay with enjoying something specifically because it's mainstream.
of course enjoyment is a massively complex phenomenon; i always think of it as a kind of tug-of-war/conversation between the reactive subconscious and the discerning conscious to make up an individual's "taste" after a ton of input. my point was that, for *whatever reason* someone likes something, can that reason be wrong unless it's insincere? IF UNGH is only trying to argue against insincere enjoyment, then, well, ok i guess
