hey guys, i've been on unemployment for a while now, close to four months. i only apply for jobs equal to or above the level i was at previously. i'm gonna keep collecting unemployment until either i get hired(not likely), or my benefits run dry.

this isn't even a sarcastic post, i seriously am putting this out there to get some opinions on the matter.

my perspective is that you're a victim of job creation. job creation has been talked about in these campaigns like its the States' saving grace, but nobody wants to think about what jobs will be created. for instance, we've had a lot of job creation in Texas but guess what? mostly just in the defense and natural gas industries (which are both things Republicans love!) both of these things, as a humanitarian, i am staunchly against and would never dream of working in either field. so self-proclaimed good guys like me get stuck with unemployment or food service.

i also think that the idea that we should always try to create jobs is a detriment. if we all lived in a utopian, would we be working 9-5s? not me.

The particular person I was in contact with was unceasingly supportive of Obama, which clearly skewed my perspective. She was probably supportive for other reasons, we never had a real in-depth chat about politics (thank god)

you never had an in-depth convo and you thought you knew her well enough to pigeonhole her into a demographic and even worse let her skew your perspective? that explains why there's a whole page of you beating a dead horse. at least you apologized...

How is job creation a detriment?

Unless you're capable of providing for yourself entirely (creating your own shelter, growing your own food, developing your own technology, ensuring your own equally-rigorous standards of safety, upholding your own barriers of defense, providing your own entertainment, partaking in your own infrastructure, etc), you're going to be relying on the rest of society which leverages specialization in order to provide goods/services/intellectual capital to bolster your quality of life.

I never had an in-depth chat because I couldn't get a word in edgewise. One-sided lecturing is not a conversation- she pigeonholed herself quite capably without me.

I did use Utopian society as an example, no jobs is the best case (and probably unattainable) scenario. My views are certainly not those of a capitalist. The ideal quality of life you speak of necessitates capitalism for said specialization, my ideal quality of life necessitates creating your own shelter, growing your own food, developing your own technology, ensuring your own equally-rigorous standards of safety, upholding your own barriers of defense, providing your own entertainment, partaking in your own infrastructure, etc

my whole story is more tragic and more self-inflicted than just job creation. i did get screwed, hard. i've no doubts about that. here's the funny part; government is what screwed me, in an effort to save money. so there i was, getting paid to work for them, and now i'm getting paid by them to do nothing. i've been without a job for almost eight months, and it'll continue for at least three more months. if i do get hired, then the government will be paying me more than i was making previously.

what i was trying to say was that while well-qualified and well-paid jobs decrease, low-qualified and low-pay jobs increase. it goes hand in hand with the shrinking middle class.
