I live in NS, Canada and I do lock my doors. I don't neccessarily live in a bad community or city but just like any other place in the world, we have our crime rates. You should always lock your doors, better safe than sorry.

The door for my actual room is broken, the lock isn't lined up with the hole in the wall (whatever you call those) so I actually can't lock it. I also don't lock my actual residence dorm door either, neither does my roommate, cause it's actually just inconvenient to unlock it. Our floor is super chill and nobody ever tries to open or knock on the door when we are here, at whatever hour of the day, and the norm is that the door is locked, so nobody tries to open them. Plus there's 2 security checks before you actually get on our floor, two card swipes, so it's unlikely for random people to get onto our floor anyways. Last year, I always locked my room door though, but not our dorm door cause once again, convenience.

Yes sir I do lock my doors at night. My neighborhood is awful, I've lived here 10 months and I've had thieves at least once already.

Parents raised me with the front door locked at all times. They're rarely home nowadays so it's mostly just me and my sister. We usually leave it unlocked.

            Ontario btw

                  Re: Dear Canadians/Americans

Not once can I remember a full day that one of my door's isn't locked in the last 10 years or more - it's just part of the normal routine. However, there have been a few car/garage shoppers in my neighborhood the last couple years, and my brother's car almost had everything in it stolen but the police arrived just as they were leaving.

For the most part, everything is locked, sometimes when people are home as well. I yell at those who don't lock the door and are the last one's the leave, even if the house is empty for just 5 minutes, you lock the door.

                  US, Minnesota btw.
                  yo, I wouldn't do it.

                    Re: Dear Canadians/Americans

American/don't. Growing up, and even to this day my friends just walk in the house unexpected to hang out (though now I usually get a phone call or fb message nowadays this still happens very often). I started locking the door more recently since I got robbed but that had nothing to do with my door being unlocked so that doesn't really change my opinion on locked doors. But yeah. I don't even have a key to unlock the doors should I get locked out.

The headlines tomorrow... FFR user Reincarnate wanted on suspicion of mass robbery against FFR users who admitted to keeping their properties unlocked.

UK, Locked. Personally I think it must be nice to live somewhere you can have your door unlocked all the time, and friends are pretty free to come and go. I'm from the UK, and I've always grown up with my doors locked. Since moving in with my nan we have them unlocked a fair portion of the time for family to come in, but not usually at any time I'm not home. We live in a really quite nice area though, so we probably could get away with having doors unlocked. I left my bike unlocked out the front of my house for over a year without it getting stolen, then left it overnight in Portsmouth town centre, locked up, and it got nicked.

So far 8/55 Americans leave their doors unlocked ~15%
7/30 Canadians also leave their doors unlocked ~23%

i really don't see a good reason why you would leave your doors unlocked 24/7, if youre manning the house that's one thing but if no one's there, you should have some sort of system so it isn't as easy as turning a knob to break in. although in my experience, most thievery goes on between friends or acquaintances. so don't let your guard down man, there's plenty of things you wouldn't think are valuables that people would steal and you would sorely miss. that goes for cars too.

I don't even realize it most of the time, but I always turn the little deadbolt on our inside doors (between rooms and hallways).

Kinda been a stickler recently about the front door since the weather has been nice. I come home from school and it's unlocked so I can get in, but I lock it once I'm inside.

Back door, door to the garage and front door are always locked up at night before bed.
