    Re: Dear Canadians/Americans

I live in a dorm. I typically have the door unlocked when I'm awake in my room and I have it locked if I'm sleeping or out. Theft seems to be a big issue on many college campuses and I don't want to have my things stolen.

All entrances/exits locked at all times unless I'm going out (WITH OTHER PEOPLE HOME) I'll unlock the door I'm gonna come back into and let parents know it's unlocked (easier than taking my key).

I currently live in a dorm and I actually never lock my door. To get into the building though you need to scan your ID so the only people who would be stealing from me (probably) would be my fellow dorm-mates. And very few of us lock our doors, so I guess we trust each other.

Next year, however, I will be living in an apartment, and I plan on locking the door then.

Well there does seem to be a major difference between americans and canadians here.

I lock my door if i'm not around. If I'm just using the laundry machine though or i'm on the front lawn I won't.

I wouldn't if East Austin wasn't so sketchy at times, reason why I double lock my apartment. Got to protect that Xbox and Gamecube!

Always. If you leave them unlocked you make it monumentally easier for burglars.

Although, I have read that it might be a good idea to leave your car doors unlocked if you have nothing of value inside the car. A burglar breaking your car window could be worse than him/her just taking what is inside.
But then again, why would they break your window if they didn't see anything? So I don't know how much I trust that source.

                          Re: Dear Canadians/Americans

American. Of course I lock my doors. It'd be foolish not to. Forget burglars, etc ... but do you really want to come home one night to find some street bum vagrant there? Or worse?

Also if you live in a gated community, not locking your door doesn't really count as "not locking your door" since the whole community is gated (locked to outsiders).

Making guns illegal doesn't stop criminals from having guns, nor does it make people safer. No, I don't have a gun, and I don't approve of idiots who wave their guns around either, but there are perfectly valid reasons for having them. Just don't be stupid with them.

I live in Toronto and I lock my door, it's a habit that I got from my parents, but a lot of my friends leave their door open so I can just walk in.

I'm in the UK and don't lock my door unless I go out or go to bed.

I live in a really nice, rich area though.
