I'm getting a new system for my birthday, and I'm considering a Wii. However, I'd like to know which system you guys think I should get. So which system is best out of these three?

If you don't have a 360, I'd definitely go for that.FUS RO DAH! -
Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
Questions like this come around really often, and honestly, there's no way to tell you which you should buy. However, each system has its strengths and weaknesses, so you can use these to determine what you want:
Microsoft Xbox 360 - Huge game library, established system, excellent controller. However, its games are pretty traditional and the system itself isn't very innovative. But if there's nothing special you particularly want or are looking forward to, this is a great choice.
Nintendo Wii - This is the oddball system. The vast majority of its games are off-the-wall, unique, games. Most of its games aren't very "hardcore," serious, games. Mainly you'll find simple, easy-to-pick-up party games, so if that's your thing, this is the system you want. However, you will find the occasional "traditional" game that is absolutely amazing, e.g., No More Heroes. If you aren't going to be buying too many games for a system, then that isn't an issue.
Sony PlayStation 3 - I don't have one myself, but I can tell you what I know from others' experiences. Its game library isn't exactly spectacular right now. However, it does have some exclusives coming in the future that could change that (though, FFXIII is now 360 too, if you're looking forward to that). This is definitely the system you'll want to buy for the future, as although it's currently not that great, its future looks promising. Just beware the high price tag.
Honestly, if you can't make a decision, I'd go with the 360. It's an extremely versatile system due to its massive library, so you can buy a variety of games in different genres. Its online function does cost a fairly significant amount, and I think both the Wii and PS3 are free in that area, but I think it's worth it. Just evaluate the strengths of each system and determine which is important to you.Comment

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
Only problem with the 360 though is it's high failure rate. They have extended warranties on them for the RRoD but it's annoying having to send it in. More than half of Xboxs I know have failed but all have been fixed for free.Comment

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
The thing Relambrien fails to point out about the Wii is ironically it's strongest suit. First party games. They're all good. The games he's alluding to that aren't that great, the party game ****, it's mostly 3rd party.
But yeah, if you're not interested in first party Nintendo games, then the Wii is definitely not for you. The PS3 has some decent exclusives on the horizon (ignoring Final Fantasy even, looking at LittleBigPlanet and Gran Tourismo myself here), but that's the future. In the here and now, PS3 is basically only worthwhile as a Bluray player.
In other words, if you love Nintendo franchises, go for the Wii, if you don't have a history of liking 1st party Nintendo games, go for the 360.
EDIT: Notice this person's pointing out of the "strong suits" of the PS3. Notice that he doesn't even mention gaming. Notice that he identifies two features the PS3 shares with the Wii as an apparent strong suit. Notice that his only unique and good justification of the PS3 is as a Bluray player.

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
I can see a lot of biased opinions. Let me put in my "opinion". I'll try not to sound biased.
Xbox 360 - Well, it does have a huge library of games, and its online service is probably the best compared to the other two. Chances are, your friends will (or do) have one as well. It's probably cheaper than the PS3, though not as cheap as the Wii. Its future seems promising with RB2 coming out first for 360, Gears of War 2 and more. It also has HD gameplay, so that's something you want to look at if you have HDTVs. Only problems are the failure rate, which is most likely that your 360 will break, so warranties is a must if you are willing to spend a bit more. And the online service isn't free.
Nintendo Wii - Another system with a decent number of games. Most of the games are unique and inventive, and it will force you to get off your lazy ass and move around, unless the gameplay forces otherwise. Online is free, and it's another system your friends will (or do) have. It's also the cheapest of the three. It also contains an internet browser, though it's unlikely that you'll ever use it though. Problems here are that the games aren't too "hardcore", so maybe after a while you may get bored of it. Online has no voice communications, and those annoying "friend codes". Also, it's not the best for HD gameplay if you are looking into that.
Playstation 3 - Well, a lot of people are biased against this system, others are biased FOR it. Although I don't own one myself, I'll go with what I was told and experience from others. Library is SMALL, but most of those games are promising, and its future is as well. Lots of people say that the visuals is better than the 360. I see no difference, but it does have an HDMI component (so does 360, but only for Elite). It also contains an internet broswer, but again, you'll probably never use it. Blu-ray is an advantage for it since HD-DVD dropped out, so you can also have it for a Blu-ray player. And the internet is FREE. Problems though is that your friends most likely WILL NOT own one themselves, and again the library is small. Most of its exclusives are leaving it as well to the 360 and probably Wii as well. Oh, and the big price tag will try to block your way.
IMO the system to go is the 360 for now, but I would also suggest looking at the PS3 as well. Well, it's my opinion, so you might either follow what I say, or go with your own.Comment

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
I've played the XBOX and the Wii, by far I'd say XBOX has the better games.
BUT ....
Wii has: Zelda, Mario Cart, Super Smash Bros, and a few other awesome games.Comment

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
No More Heroes would be better if it was all just boss fights because all the things in between are just boring and tedious. One of the better titles on the Wii is Twilight Princess because that game is just absolutely stunning.
Also, why would you want to surf the web on your PS3 when you have a computer?

Re: POLL- Which system should I get?
I didn't mention the first-party games because they all bored me.
Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Galaxy, they all bored me. Mainly because of the controller gimmick for TP/Galaxy, I couldn't stand slashing and stabbing with a wii remote only to have link not respond. Or to have to shake the controller to make Mario spin.
Mario Kart got boring because it was the same Mario Kart as every previous incarnation.
Brawl just didn't feel as good as Melee.
Also, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, WarioWare, etc., all first-party gimmick party games. They're fun for like a week until you've done everything and it just becomes tedious, unless you play with friends.
EDIT: I will admit, I'm biased towards improvement on "traditional" games. I prefer that gaming companies continue to develop and perfect game types from the previous generation, because things like the Wii's motion controls have had, in my opinion, a negative impact on the system as a whole. I enjoyed No More Heroes, but having to move the controller in a specific direction to perform finishers felt forced and unrealistic, like just about every other Wii game I've played that uses motion sensing like that. It's something to note that the games I have had the most fun with on the Wii (Brawl and Mario Kart, even though they both got boring), could be played with a Gamecube controller.
Rather than adapt to a new controller scheme, I think creating deeper, better, games using the traditional format would be better. It allows game developers to know what works and what doesn't, and thereby learn from past mistakes, rather than have to guess whether x mechanic would work using a different type of control scheme.Last edited by Relambrien; 08-10-2008, 01:22 PM.Comment
