i touched on that in my little mini-essay there. using jumps on all snares regardless of placement with other sounds (i used to do this w/ every file) is still not layering, its just combining the technique of placing jumps on accented notes (snares) throughout with consistent layering for everything else.

the first method is frequently used in DnB songs and it usually works fine though.

It seems like the more experienced steppers seem to incorporate jumps/hands for more mulitple sounding hits, or like a cymbal/crash/melody combo, while the less experienced SM steppers stay away from hands and try to accent based on certain sounds.

I can honestly say that I use the second method, I'm still trying to grasp the concept of layering.

No, what I meant was after you step a melody and you're putting jumps to snares, if there's not a melody note when there's a snare, I'd put a jump there anyway. Too confusing otherwise. I made All of the World the 'true layering' way, and it was overstepped as **** and made little to no sense. So I'd say that the first one is valid layering.

I wasn't saying the first one isn't a valid way of stepping. I was explaining that the term for it is not layering. Layering refers to how many sounds you stepped to. If you stepped to one sound, it doesn't matter if you put a quad to it, it's not layering.

I say both, some noises can be louder and more powerful in a song.
Like loud bass for example, or even the bass itself can be a nice jump/hand depending how the song is.
Also fun to mix it up and add jumps to other noises you hear too to make the file a bit harder.
But don't over do it and make a dump...
Some can be fun, others garbage...

just follow a few instruments at a time rather than trying to step every little sound you hear. accents on loud noises etc
