Just curious about people prefer layering. Should jumps/hands be set as multiple sounds playing at once, or should jumps/hands be set to certain noises?

Re: Layering
Poorly-worded question. It depends. You may do both.“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish... Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.”

Re: Layering
I'm not really asking which is more acceptable, but which people think makes for a more fun file.

Re: Layering
the first choice is not a form of layering. climax based stepping involves placing jumps, hands, or quads on more accentuated notes; in serious keyboard stepping its rare to find a file that utilizes this completely, but it is obviously very useful in distinguishing a particular sound when layering gets confusing with a series of single notes trying to go to many separate sounds. hands, similarly, can be used when there are 3 sounds playing at the same time -or- when there is a particularly accented sound (strong melody notes especially, not a great idea with percussion). quads should be used almost strictly for climactic purposes. there will be lots of times when there are 4 sounds landing at the same time, but those can just as easily be hands and be far less annoying to hit. i tend to keep quads isolated from other steps and use them very sparingly (this also lends the ones i do use more impact).
all imo of course m.m

Re: Layering
I would say that it depends, some songs just call for a quad on a certain part, whether there are 4 noises or not. xD

Re: Layering
I do both, and don't think either method is "better" than the other.
Yes, he's right; layering is a term that refers specifically to putting multiple layers of notes in one place. If you place an intensity-based jump to a single sound, it's still one layer.
Everyone has to start playing somewhere. If you're making a newbie file, you probably SHOULDN'T do much of either, so who's to say if it's a bad file or not? It depends on who you're writing the file for. Some of the coolest newbie files I've played here don't use many jumps at all.Comment

Re: Layering
No, what I meant was after you step a melody and you're putting jumps to snares, if there's not a melody note when there's a snare, I'd put a jump there anyway. Too confusing otherwise. I made All of the World the 'true layering' way, and it was overstepped as **** and made little to no sense. So I'd say that the first one is valid layering.Comment
