the connotation that the much of this sphere has given to recharting is something that i can't respect. this idea that because somebody else charted a song, that any future files of that song need to either be “better”, completely different than the original, or just not exist is ridiculous.

being a critic is one thing, but being disparaging is another. maybe let people make what they want

Choof can be an ass hole, and you can still enjoy playing and charting*. If you don't like getting those comments, you can either stop recharting things (which btw you should rechart stuff if you want, fuck the people who hold one to that level of esteem without giving yours a fair shot) or just do what I do and say fuck it, I release stuff regardless. Then just dismiss the idiotic rambling of some dismissive loser. (And yeah, go ahead and apply that to me when I do it. It's totally fair game.)

But if you can't be dismissive, then just, like I dunno what to tell you. Probably that quitting would be your better future.

Anyways.

I played some of the files in here in the range of what I felt I could fairly offer comments on.

I really liked A Cyber's World, Blue Rain, Fuck You, Pipe Dream, Refrain, Roflcopter & Tribal.

Blue Rain is a super fun JS file. (And I fucking hate JS centric stuff.) But probably the most fun of them was Tribal, which I didn't expect to like going into it. But it's super fucking satisfying. Roflcopter is a fun shit-post. I stand by my post from earlier about Doro no Bunzai though, it's not fun and tbh the dump doesn't work for me. Pipe Dream caught me off-guard in a good way.

If the rest of the pack pack follows most of the files I played, then I'd have to say it's a good pack, but again, those are outta my skill range.

Also did get a AAA sight-read which was cool. I don't get many of these.

i'll take the original option i went with, asking choof to chill, i'd like to just get along honestly

i actually stepped my houmous chart 2 years before samurai's was released in acerola (mine being made in 2018 and checking the date created his .sm shows 2020 but the bg and bn show 2019), i wouldn't really consider mine a restep. That being said Samurai's version is solid, he has a different style and is 100% competent at stepping, it's great. I encourage everyone to play that version and my version, and decide for themselves if they like 1 or both.

I decided to step (not restep) the song because it's an amazing song I had a lot of fun making and I put a lot of effort in to it making it enjoyable, I really like how it came out.

I'd like to point out why a single line of text is upsetting as well. The idea of restepping a song being a bad thing is actually very toxic and discouraging and actually drives people away from wanting to be a part of the community and create new stepcharts and packs. Here is an example:

The negativity outweighs the positive and it is not pretty, we drove Zebdal away in the most toxic bashful and unwelcoming manner possible in 2009 due to his resteps, I bet he could have been an amazing simauthor by now if he kept up the last 13 years. Check the Stepmania France Pack thread.

I hope this is helpful, and I really hope that we can just enjoy the site and game/pack together. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, and I anticipate the same holds true for you.

in fact, I recently told april it was cool to see a rechart of an old chart of mine that was released in usp lol
let me be clear here. the general idea that "resteps are bad, point blank period," is dumb old head shit. I selectively mentioned this one because of song choice and because, as far as etterna pack search shows, all of the other charts for it were done by literal whos. if it's any consolation to you I now know that this song's been charted by at least 5 different people and I also know that yours is probably the second best one.

I looked at the thread and honestly that might be a bad example because, like, there's this post from zebdal himself

it's a megapack of resteps simfiles.
so all simfiles have been stepped before.

the entire point of that pack was to take stuff from some of the best people making charts back then, and redo them. the link to the pack preview is dead but patashu brings up a goddamn nautilus restep. lol.
what's cool about looking at this thread though is that apparently scylaax had a bunch of stuff in the pack as well. had no idea he restepped bf2014 lmao. to be fair that one totally needs a restep. what's even cooler is that scylaax also has charts in acerola too, and they're some of the most memorable in that pack. ludus has a killer solo chart and gigadelic rmx absolutely fucking rules.

yeah I know you aren't and that's honestly great. you are de facto one of the reasons that this corner of the rhythm gaming world saw such massive growth in the 2010s. I'm sure some of the newer players are gonna see this and think I'm memeing here, but the nuclear blast pack series was a literal game changer. as far as just stepmania's history is concerned, the only other people I can think of that have had the same level of influence (or more) are people like kil and midare.
so keep making charts bub, I know you enjoy it. still gonna poke fun at the songs I think are funny to see new charts for though. also still gonna continue making charts for music that no one listens to.
