    Re: New drawing/coloring tool

The only way I can see color theory making a difference is if you have a complicated burst that is hard to read because it uses too many similar colors such that the colors aren't really helping out with the timing of the hits anyway -- in this sense, color theory would help make the burst easier to read without really sacrificing the notion of having colors designate timing everywhere else in the song.

But if a song has uneven BPM, it is a harder song to step because you have to keep re-adjusting the BPM. I don't think it makes sense to just change the colors and pretend something is a different type of step than it really is. A stepfile should be properly synced to the file no matter what -- changing the colors is going to screw with people who use colors for timing because a red note "sounds" a certain way relative to the music, and so if you're labeling it as red when it's really not, it's going to feel awkward. Of course, the extent of the awkwardness is dependent on how far off the sync is to begin with, but really it's not a big deal to just adjust the BPM/sync.

I mean, okay, if you want to use different colors for the sake of artistic expression, that's fine if you wish for your file to be more of an art piece for fun. But it needs to add something. I feel like color theory didn't add any sort of palpable, tangible difference in that video recently posted. It felt arbitrarily random to me and it seemed to just muddle up the file and just destroy information that could have been useful for timing otherwise.

For instance I might see color theory making a difference if you're playing a file where suddenly the music sounds "icy" (chimes, echoes, perhaps even watery noises, etc), where you use many blues/purples/maybe pinks/etc -- generally cool colors. Hot colors for more aggressive sections, etc.

Warm vs. cool vs. jarring vs. harmonious vs. vibrant vs. softened jarring etc

This would take forever to reply to with my phone so I'll go ahead and just say that lord of the dance uses absolute colour association so it isn't the best references when talking about colour theory in your sense. I'll get back to you on this when I wake up

This is pretty much what I reserve colour theory usage for, aside from the 192nd notes I use in all of my files, lol. I limit myself so I don't go all eXPReSSiVeLy overboard with the colours being used because I do realize that too much of it ruins the overall structure and appeal of a file and it just becomes too awkward to playthrough (Lord of the Dance is a good example. The colour theory being used is unique and very original but it's awkward to playthrough for scoring). But when the opportunity arises where colours can express and match the feel and mood of a certain section of a song, I go all out with it because it makes it much more interesting and creative.
