How do you recognize a double step?

I tap my feet when making a chart to make sure there's no double step. But it gets frustrating in charts with uber long streams. Some people on the other hand recognize double steps instantly. How do they do that? Is there a list of patterns I should memorize?

well, start with a higher speed mod, it helps read faster notes and stuff. at advanced peoples levels id say we notice double notes because of placement and because of colour of notes. colour of notes helps me keep in time.

Play your charts using only your index fingers. Slow down the song if you need to, and then when you find the finger that has to move twice, or uncomfortably because of an ambiguous pattern, you've found your step error/problem. As you familiarize yourself with non-working patterns, you'll just eventually stop using them.

what I do to recognise it is to change the rate to .3 and pretend you're playing your song, and if you notice you have to doublestep or have to do a really awkward spin, then it's a doublestep. If you don't have enough room to move, then just move your legs accordingly while sitting down.

Like TC:halogen said. Index pretty much makes it obvious, but after playing index so much it is pretty easy to just see. I play index in my head when watching notes.

The only reason i can see for not seeing a double step right off is if you have never played ddr and you started stepmania with spread. Double stepping is never a concern or even a thing at all.

if you have a right and a left on the same color then you have a doublestep (assuming it's a straight stream)

The more you play, the easy it will be to recognize things like this.
I know that's how I learned... I never knew how Xiao could always pin point everything as it was coming up in my pad files.
Now i can do the same.

Double steps occur with two notes in a row. In any straight stream two notes in a row will never be the same color. Not sure what you are talking about unless you are saying that over a whole measure this will happen. If that's the case i have never paid enough attention to realize this.

I come from DDR, so I just naturally recognize spins, crossovers, doublestepping, etc.
Years of practice, it's like spotting a typo.

Well...isn't using feet basically the same as using index? And I'd like to be able to do it just with my brain.

I do play spread but also on a pad(started about a year ago). Thing is, while I'm playing I don't have time to pay attention to the patterns.

Obviously that's easy for you to say.

Then you don't play anything hard, I learned what a spin was first week of playing, i learned crosses when i played on light (still 1st week), I read double steps 1st month.. its been 4 years now. =P
