It gets boring if you play too much. If you just take breaks of not playing for a while and starting again it's not too bad and not playing for long periods of time.
Anyways, the downfall will be like any other bemani game when people just get tired of it and the community slowly decreases in size rather than increasing.

I usually only play 15-20 minutes at a time myself. I hork out a few of my favorite songs, stab away at some hard ones, see what happens, and move on.

No one good actually plays SM anymore. Eggman and Nima do but they REALLY REALLY REALLY don't count.

tsutter plays occasionally. Reach plays every now and then. Everyone else good has quit. Pretty soon no one good will play Stepmania at all.

I don't know why I ever played SM to begin with. It's just a boring piece of garbage compared to IIDX or any other music game.

Two months ago I would've disagreed with this. Now I don't.

Deji hit the nail on the head (simple concept has nothing to do with it though; people know it's a simple concept game from the beginning).

The reason people can play StepMania for such long spans of time - from months to years - is simple: Recent simfiles. The community continues to introduce simfile makers that try to raise the bar (or at least satisfy the more experienced players). People after long breaks will tend to come back for this very reason, creating new scores to beat, trying new tactics with Cmods or perspective mods to improve, etc. But SM is just like any game, and it eventually gets boring.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but I still wanted to touch more on the subject.

I think there will be another generation of sm players though... I don't think it will die when this one gradually loses interest. It's true that mass people are quitting or have quit, but I think another group of players will come along at some point to replace us.

You mean like when DDR went mainstream? I don't know if it will have the same scope as that. EVERYBODY started to play.
