    Mashing: Evil or Insane?

I have a question for you people.

I was playing a set of MP games against a guy who was WAAAY better than me.
And lost every single one. He was a fun guy to talk with and we were having fun, so it didn't matter to me that I was losing, though.
After all, what's a MP rank but a number. The game's about having fun, right?

It was obvious he was really good, and so I just chose the hardest song I could think of. Frictional Nevada (FGO)

Now, I knew I never stood a chance of actually beating the guy, but I was doing it for fun. And he starts doing good and I am just struggling to keep up. My hands are tired after all that, and I just start hitting keys. I dunno how or why, but I starting getting an insane combo (just pure damn luck), and he all of a sudden stops the game.

I stop after a second or so, and ask him why.

And he yells. "MASHER! I knew it!" "You can be banned for that." "I don't play against mashers" and leaves.

From what I know, when I started all those years ago, mashing keys was an acceptable strategy for a noob who can't do **** in a tough song. That's me. I can't even see the notes in some FMO/FGO, much less figure out the patterns and hit the correct keys that fast. But, I wasn't aware that this had been declared cheating at some point in the past.

I don't check the forums often, and I don't play that much, so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something.

I just want a clarification here. Is just mashing keys because you stand no chance of even surviving otherwise, a legitimate (if noobish) strategy, or a bannable offense?

If it's legit (but noob), that's fine. That's what I was under the impression of.
If it's illegal, I will issue an apology, because I didn't know any better.

In fact, I'll say it right now.
TSB_(Fusion): We had a bunch of cool games played, and I was having fun. I'm sorry that I was mashing keys to try and keep up with you. I was unaware this was against the rules, and I am sorry. I hope to play future MP games against you when I get better, because even though I lost 25 matches in a row against, it was fun because you weren't mean or gloating about it. I enjoyed the matches immensely, and I'm sorry.
    Sincerely,
    Rauchster

    Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Mashing's part of the game. If you don't do it for certain songs, good luck getting on the top 50 on Revolutionary Etude unless you're the best of the best of the best. I don't know any top-tier player that doesn't mash (or hasn't mashed) on certain songs, even on SM where the timing is more strict.

Mashing is sort of like using the bar on DDR/ITG or wavedashing on SSBM: while it might not be as fun as playing in a straightforward way, it's a consequence of the way the game's engine works and as such is a part of the game. No amount of whining from the community will change that; if you want to eliminate it, change the way the game works.

I don't know if you can get banned for it, but I completely understand the mashing thing. I've done my share of mashing when I was playing too hard of songs and trying to keep up to really good FRR'ers in the game as well. XD I suggest you don't do it again though, because you'll never get better.... but some songs are exceptions O_o played molto vivace yet? lol

I'm glad someone knowledgeable posted about this.
        Thanks for the response Arch0wl.
I'm glad to know I wasn't doing something wrong. I figured that mashing was part of the game, how else can you finish a few of those songs? Aside from being way better than I am now.

lol well, the reason people get pissed off about it in multiplayer is because FFR uses a combo-based scoring system. For the people who don't mash, and actually try to hit all the arrows, it's hard for a lot of them even to FC something like Frictional Nevada. They put a lot of effort even into FCing it. When somebody comes around and pounds some quads and rakes an FC in, they get angry. That's why.

No, you can't get banned for mashing, that's dumb XD I also realize you already got your answer, but I just wanted to tell you why it pisses some people off.

Mashing....stupid, only retards mash, if you don't try you wont get any better. Also, don't listen to fusion, it's not a bannable offense. Boosting (pretty much double browsing to raise your MP level.) Using a trainer, spamming, flamming, disrespect, ect. are all bannable offenses. Mashing, isin't and wont ever be considered cheating. It just shows your skill level is bleh and dedication to getting better has not been brough to attention as much as most of the other players.

Reach--who was probably one of the most epic players I've ever seen--mashed on a good number of songs, including blur, which he currently has the record for despite having not played in a very long time by FFR time standards.

Don't get me wrong, if all you do is mash then you won't get better for sure. But mashing on certain sections of some songs is almost necessary unless you're already so good that you'd be in the top 25 anyway. I'm just saying, very few issues are black and white so watch out when you use words like "only."

Besides, if you're so good that you don't need to mash *ever* then you should be winning all of your multiplayer games anyway. If someone mashed against me on Strangeprogram I would win. XD

                Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Mashing is not cheating. I'd like to see anyone actually PLAY Identity Part 2 Oni, or 960 BPM Speedcore without mashing.

FFR is no different, some songs require you to mash..Vertex BETA vrofl? Mashing is a type of skill (stamina).

Also, Saur, you're calling every godly SM player retarded then.

                  Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Considering current FFR scoring system, any mashers can beat "decent non-mashers" on harder songs that those players normally can't combo very well.

Yeah even with mashing if you can get higher score than the opponent, officially you can win the MP game. But most players think mashing is ridiculous and unfun because the whole concept of this game is hitting arrows that go with the music accurately, mashing totally ruins the concept.

ps I'm not completely against mashing, it is "sometimes" needed.

One time I got 13-0-0-1 on FOTBB in MP and the guy called me a masher and left.

                        Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Usually mashing in MP ends up in a "Don't play this guy, he mashes hard songs" kind of deal. Mashing can be fun, but try not to do it in MP.
