Multi quote related thread (Sorry, it's a subbie thread.): http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...ad.php?t=93358

      Sorry, off-topic ness.

So, sort of on-topic-ness: I once got mad at my terrible stamina and consistency, and mash FC'd EHHS. I felt really guilty about what I did, and spent like the next week or so trying to get a better score without mashing, which resulted in my current rank. Never mashed again. At least not intentionally (AIM, Club, DP scores could be considered mashing.)

If you two were just playing for fun, I don't see why your opponent would get upset just over mashing. Seems like he was really trying to level up his mp level by beating you every time.

edit: Non subbies can't see that thread Midday. So this thread might be the only mentioning of it to non subbies.

That's what I thought when I read it. 1 out of 25 games? lol Why else would he be upset. Even though this game is for fun, I hate beating someone more than 2-3 times.

            Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Thanks for all the tremendous feedback.
Didn't think I'd generate this much in replies, but apparently I did.

I just want to clarify a couple of points from what people have said.
Normally, I don't mash, I realize that it's not the right work to improve, and I have no delusions that I'm anywhere even near the top people. I try to stick to songs that I can come close to FC'ing. Which is generally in the Very Difficult/ Challenging area for me.
Those I can read and play without getting lost (too much). And I'm slowly improving my ranks, and getting better, so it's all good.
Whenever I play FGO and most FMO's, though. I'm completely lost when it gets to the really fast parts, even at 200% I can't see the spaces and patterns, so yes I'll mash when needed, but I always try and play normally when I can see what needs to be hit.

I don't care much about my MP Rank, it's just a number right?
And besides, the lower you are, the more people tend to underestimate you.
            FC's: 440 (1 FGO, 2 FMO, 15 VCh, 57 Ch, All VD and below as of 12/06/08)
            AAA's: 5
Most Recent FC: Ramua (Sightread - 55-4-0-3)
Hardest AAA: Save Me, Standard (5)
            Tier Points: 14

              Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

I smash stuff like OMW, but I can AAA songs some people here can't even fathom FC'ing. Does that make me a retard?

              I suppose so.

              Generalizations are great.
Why would you put that in your signature? You've lost your signature rights for a month. (You'll get them back on March 10th, 2012.)

                Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Mashing is only really a way to pass the songs that are basically impossible otherwise... VBvrofl for example.

                  Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

Just to contribute, I mash for fun. I try my hardest not to mash in MP, unless of course my opponent is easy going and/or in agreement to mashing for fun. Out of MP, songs that (at this point in time) I know I won't even have a chance at normally FCing (most FMOs, all FGOs), I have fun attempting to build up stamina by mashing. I've gotten quicker, and it's been fun. If you look at my top non-AAA level ranks, you'll see quite a few misleading scores and/or FCs. But does it matter? When I'm good enough, I'll have more fun cleanly FCing incredibly difficult songs. But for now I have fun mashing (from time to time).

                    Re: Mashing: Evil or Insane?

I don't particularly mind mashing, but I hate it when my FCs aren't clean, so I only mash on those I would have no chance on otherwise (some parts of FMOs, all FGOs). Mashing is an integral part of getting better; I find that if I mash something repeatedly, at some point I will actually begin to comprehend the notes and be able to do it without mashing.
