Re: Finger placement
Welcome to FFR, first and foremost!
There are several ways to play this game. Some are more efficient then others! I'll list the styles that are most common, but not limited to:
One Hand: You use 1 hand 3 fingers where your middle fingers hits the up and down arrow, or 3 finger 1 thumb where you use your thumb as a down arrow and keep the other fingers where they are. This style is common for a lot of newbies, but it is inefficient for fast streams, jump streams and runningmen. If you are not familiar with these terms, click here!
Spread: The most common spread is-
Left arrow = left middle finger
Down arrow = left index finger
8 on Numb Pad = right index finger
6 on Num Pad = right middle finger
Although there are several different styles such as ASKL, QWOP, ZXNM, etc. which can be used with the in-game hotkey program. What this does is uses 2 hands to increase speed and efficiency on runningmen and jumpstream. This style can have difficulty with one handed trills though, which leads me to my final style:
Index: This is where you use 2 fingers: Your left index finger, and your right index finger. The placement doesn't really matter, but you move around to whatever feels comfortable, kind of like the way you play DDR with your feet. You only have 2 feet, you only use 2 fingers. Trills in songs such as Flight of the Bumblebee can be dominated with this style, but jumpstream can be very difficult, especially in songs like Pants, and Grand Gallop Chromatique.
Personally, I would say use the spread style. 4 fingers, 2 hands. This style is probably the most common for most Stepmania and FFR players. If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to answer.

Re: Finger placement
First of all, there is no "best" way to play FFR. However, most people find spread the easiest to excel at. As for finger placement, do whatever feels most comfortable or natural.
Izzy: I've never seen anyone use those key configs before. O_OComment

Re: Finger placement
Izzy's configuration isn't that bizarre. I've seen it before.
I play spread with Q, W, [, and ].
I literally play spread.Comment

Re: Finger placement
Yeah I just stick with ASKL, but Izzy's QSLP sounds very interesting, so I will give it a try.Comment

Re: Finger placement
I play 2 handed with the default arrow keys, I just tilt my keyboard when i play. I've gotten used to it. Does anybody else play like this? (left index down arrow, left middle left arrow, right index right arrow, right middle up arrow).Comment

Re: Finger placement
I play with keys C V N M, two hands. For me, it's important to have my fingers relatively close together, as it gives me a sense of connection (in the fingers) which helps with regular and quick jumpstreams. Most of all, it's very comfortable for me, and you need to figure out what is most comfortable for you. I know I used to play with just the arrow keys, but since (on my keyboard) the arrow keys are not in one line, it always felt slightly awkward. That's just me, pick your comfort.HIGH-FIVING A MILLION ANGELS!

i think if you started playing a certain way you could like basically perfect it. i use one hand, three fingers. i hate that i can't hit some notes though.Comment

Re: Finger placement
Arrow-key killer all the way. Sure, I went through a one-handed phase (I even got one of my AAAs that way, on Dance 2 This) when I started to think that all the songs were too easy since I could pass them all, but the new generation of FMO/FGO songs has completely changed that.Originally posted by thesunfanI literally spent 10 minutes in the library looking for the TWG forum on Smogon and couldn't find it what the fuck is this witchcraft IGR

Re: Finger placement
By default I just use the numberpad (2-4-8-6)
Tried out Xiao's new style consisting of letters and the numberpad (D-F-5-6), though I'm not used to it. But at least it feels nice not having to cram both hands on the numberpad.
Sometimes I'd use just letters (D-F-J-K), but as I said I'm not used to it.Comment
