Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Batch #1 complete)
In relation to my smile song, I have made these changes to my song in relation to your notes. For some of you, I would like to continue this conversation further:
Dossar:
1) FixedSmile Song – 8/10
1) - Measure 6 get rid of the 24th minijack please
2) - Measure 21 you should still continue layering the 4ths like you did earlier for consistency. The percussion layering here actually works out pretty nicely
2) I was considering that. I agree. Fixed it.
kjwkjw:
1) Thanks! I tried to pick one that really could be stepped nicely, without boring or causing a headache to ani-pony peeps.Smile Song (Xiz) [7.5/10]
==========
1) I don't really care for too many pony songs, but this was enjoyable!
2) m. 21~27 - how about throwing some notes in for percussion? Feels like it'd be more fun with jumps on every other 4th, starting on beat 81.
3) m. 33~36 - nice change of pace, but it feels inconsistent since you suddenly stop stepping the drumbeats that continue. If you would like to incorporate them into the section without putting too many jumps, you can use colored notes to express the synth. If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to PM me.
2) Added, Fixed
3) After sitting here for a while I think I finally understand what you mean... I tried to layer it a wee bit more... and I think this might be a good compromise?
MarioNintendo
1) Oopsie lol. My b ^^Smile Song (6.5/10)
1)Xiz, don't use your cdtitle. Now I know it's you, I'll have to give you a shit score. jk but be careful. n00b.
2)36.426s Drum PR suggestion, putting this jump as a (34) would be more effective!
3)41.283s I think you dropped the layering a bit too quick, there, buddy, there should be more arrows before 43.569s at the very least
4)45.854s Minor-ish complaint, since you put jumps to every drum beat before this part, it's distracting that you did not even acknowledge them with single arrows during that segment. I don't think it would add much difficulty, if that was your concern for stepping it this way, and I think it would make that part feel more complete in the end.
5)73.283s to 81.759s This feels like a work in progress. The layering drops so suddenly without warning, you are losing all your momentum. Putting jumps over the "new synth" like you did at 75.283s is alright, but it leaves a gap so immense in the meantime that it just feels plain wrong.
Some fun little rhythms here and there, but I think you have to iron out your layering a bit beforehand.
2) I see what you mean. Fixed.
3) Fixed. Made jumps instead of singles.
4) I'm really struggling with this. I really did not want to add it because I wanted to cater to the lower difficulty, but now that I look over this again, I have sided with you on this. I changed the layering in that section to fit the rest of the song by adding jumps. It increased the difficulty a bit, but its still playable by D1 peeps.
5) Yeah I just didn't want it to be repetitive. I layered it a bit more properly, where I continued my jumps on the snare.
Bmah:
1) I'm sorry, but I actually really like those in there in both sections... I'm more then willing to change it, but I feel like it adds more then subtracts from the song. If you really are opposed to it lets talk.Smile Song / Xiz
rating: 7.5/10 [+.]
1) 24.09s,65.62s: don't need the 48th
2) 26.62-26.90s,34.14s,35.19s,etc.: it's more confusing if you occasionally step the swing rhythm in between the lyrics, because it muddles up what the player's trying to follow and understand. Just focus on specific elements of the song one section at a time. You can layer the swing rhythms in later, and it might be a good idea to do so since the song repeats.
3) 41.85-43.57s: where are the jumps?
4) 45.85s,55.00s: jump to cymbal crash
5) 70.33s: how about an up arrow for better PR?
6) 73.28-80.14s: you don't need to halt layering to showcase the new melody. Color theory would work well here.
7) Summary: Nice work for one of your first submissions! A pretty laid-back file, not much else to say other than perhaps trying to layer in the swing melody later on for some variety.
EDIT: Especially how I increased the difficulty slightly by layering jumps on the section where it was missing before... I think it flows better with it now.
2) Okay, I adjusted it a bit, not sure if I fixed the problem fully but I think its an improvement.
3) They were stolen. I found them. They are back in the file.
4) Fixed
5) Oh wow I never noticed that. Thanks! Fixed.
6) I'd like to talk to you a bit more about this. I'm not sure how I can implement color theory here well, because im afraid I might over-color it if that makes sense. Teach me the ways of color theory oh wise one! Haha.
7) Thanks a bunch man.

Oh yeah, Mr. Cubone, if I didn't know any better, I think your Smile song will get through no problem. So congrats on your first file!
I'll congratulate you again when it eventually releases.

@Xiz: whoopsie, was going to reply to your PM, but I guess I can post here instead.
Continuing the jumps like you have in your screenshot would be an option, yes. If you think that takes away from the easy feel you want in your file, we can try to work something out, haha. Just let me know via Skype ^.^;

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Batch #1 complete)
Short of being one of the judges, tbh you don't need to read it.
Middie:
-1 for the stringency (you kinda ran into a double-edged sword -- it was good that it was very easy to understand, but you left yourself no room to really keep it different and fresh).
-1 for the huge jumpstream difficulty spike in the final stretch
-1 for the notation change at the end -- you had very powerful accents at the end of each drum fill that signified the start of a new measure, but you divided the BPM by 2/3 and it made some of those accents on 12th notes, which really didn't look very good.
- I start all files off with a base value of 9.
I want a re-judge of two of my files, because I got completely screwed over by Kommi, and his notes were absolute garbage.
It is kind of bull shit I lose an automatic point because of your judging prefrences, and I lose a point for climaxing the ending.
They're entirely separate beats in their own right, but concept wise I would ask you would you dock Pandora for the same spike (remember this is in concept), and dock it harder because the spike there is greater? I imagine your answer would likely be no, so I'm confused at why you would dock me for a difficulty spike, especially when the idea of this stream existing is kind of in the back of your head because of the broken jumpstream earlier giving you a foreshadow of it.
The only docks from that exact list I can even agree with are the stringency dock and the bpm reduction ignoring the "which really didn't look very good." part of your reasoning.
Also, while his notes aren't "garbage" because they're at least insightful, I would sort of like to see a rereview of N's Farewell in place of Dossar's, he's not a bad guy but I don't think his insights warranted the docks given due to being an argument over such subjective ideas.
Also Xiz, nice job on smile song. I'm gonna hate it when it gets in game because of how happy it is, but I least hope your chart is way better than the one I was working on forever ago and scrapped.Comment

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Batch #1 complete)
@Midnight sometimes things should be kept simple based on the slowness and lower difficulty of a chart. Just because the song has color gallops doesn't always mean it should be stepped that way.
In the case of N’s Farwell the jumps replacing the grace notes would work better because it covers the gallops and removes the color notes the player has to read. My judging puts a heavy emphasis on the player and the chart is obviously intended to be of a lower difficulty – the song itself is mellow and does increase in intensity but does not warrant hands. A player at that level of difficulty is better off having a good rhythm to follow than suddenly have to switch to gallops.
Someone may as well just submit a piano song where the person playing the piano is doing 3 or more notes at a time and pressing the keys lightly. It is 60 bpm 8th notes, but the piano player is doing 3-4 notes each time. The entire song would be hands and quads if "stepped technically". Does anyone here seriously want to play something like that? Your file doesn’t need to cover the entire 8th stream played by the musician – put an emphasis on the melody and you can remove the hands and let the player immerse him/herself into a nice, calm piece of music with a chart to the prominent piano rather than the background 8th piano that isn’t as dominant.Last edited by DossarLX ODI; 05-31-2013, 09:25 PM.Originally posted by hi19hi19oh boy, it's STIFF, I'll stretch before I sit down at the computer so not I'm not as STIFF next time I step a fileComment

So would I be able to submit a cleaned up/better version of TWFF in the July-Aug. batch, or does the rejection mean I can't do that? The renegade has betrayed me.Comment

Well first, wait for the final list of accepted files that jimerax will announce soon. That list will also include the top 10 files that were closest to acceptance, but were rejected. Those rejected songs are eligible for resubmissions in the next batch. If your file was not close to that, then you'll just have to submit it again as a regular submission in the next batch.Comment

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Batch #1 complete)
Yes I was
I was telling people in TB chat I dislike extremely happy music and stepping a song like that would be torture. So I jokingly started making a chart for it. Sadly my computer messed up and I lost the chart.
Edit: Jake Ferg. Is the one who recommended it btw.
Also
This is still a subjective line of thought that is based off what you think vs what I think. For me, not using the grace notes derives the fun I do have playing it from the chart. If we stepped all easier charts this way, they'd drag really hard (which some already argue they do.) The grace notes not only fill my desire for technicality, but it also is what makes it fun, a least for me.@Midnight sometimes things should be kept simple based on the slowness and lower difficulty of a chart. I'm really wondering why you're bothering arguing about this then. If you have some objective reasons that you'd like to point out, then go ahead and do that. It'll better your argument rather than saying "your argument is subjective. I think you're wrong, because I think my opinion is right"This is still a subjective line of thought that is based off what you think vs what I think. Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Batch #1 complete)
Because the argument's subject "using graces or not" is a subjective argument entirely. there's no set in stone rule about it. I'm arguing his score is baseless because each section of his notes is all about what he would prefer, which isn't worth a 5. A 5 is something that has an abundance of errors that are identified to be fixed, maybe some subjective material tossed in. Not over simple subjective differences. That would be more of a 6+ range where it's either close to queue worthy but not quite there, to queue worthy one to three or so ideas being tossed around to maximize potential, and maybe an error or two.I'm really wondering why you're bothering arguing about this then. If you have some objective reasons that you'd like to point out, then go ahead and do that. It'll better your argument rather than saying "your argument is subjective. I think you're wrong, because I think my opinion is right"
The short hand of everything is that I am arguing based off the content of his notes being completely a subjective manner, his score should be either ignored or replaced because he hasn't identified anything that explains his score within reason.Comment
