Menu Music Competition – We Want Your Track!
We hope you all are enjoying your break so far (for those of you back in school, sux2bu!). Since our resurrection, we’ve seen lots of changes to the site and the game itself. However, there’s more work to be done, and your help is needed!
We need new game menu music! Emotions by Trance [] Control has served us well for the last several years, but a new generation needs a new feel, and that’s why we want your track! So any of you music producers out there, it’s time to start composin’. If you send us a great track, we’ll put it up for all the FFR Players to hear and you’ll get to follow in the footsteps of Emotions too
Here is what we are looking for in your compositions:
- Any genre (just keep in mind, it should be something suitable for “menu music”)
- Any BPM/Meter/Key
- Between :45 and 1:45 long.
- Must be loopable
- 16-32 bars of music (A 4/4 time signature is not required!)
And here’s what we know you’re looking for, the prizes:
1st – 100k Credits + song in the game
2nd – 30k Credits
3rd – 10k Credits
First, we’ll battle all of your tracks against each other until the best three rise to the top. After that comes the real fight, we pit your track against Emotions to see which one has more of that FFR Vibe to it. If your track can stand up to it, then it will become the new most listened to song in the game (imagine that)! If not, well, we’ll still give you the credits but Emotions will still continue its reign of terror….
And if you’re still reading to here, then you probably want the nitty-gritty on how to send your tracks to us. Here’s what you need to do:
1) Submit a zip file of an mp3 of your submission. Bitrate doesn’t matter (we do want to hear all of the quality though!), because if you win we will ask you for an uncompressed version.
2) Also in that zip file, you should include a text document (.txt preferred) with the following:
-Your real name
-Your FFR username
- Title of your track
3) Title the zip file as follows: ffrusername_menumusic. And send it via email as an attachment or link to [email protected], with “FFR MENU” as the subject.
All submissions are due by February 10th at Midnight Server Time (CST)
Multiplayer Update
Yesterday a nice update was pushed to the server, MP games will now record as MP games along with working rank updates. Along with this update, I fixed the bug that prevented me from updating the older engine to use the new MP file.
Simply Put:
- Multiplayer from ANY engine.
- Scores now record as MP games.
- (Untested) Ranks should also now update.
(A little Late, but Happy New year from me, Velocity – “The Ocelot”
)
Replays update
Update #3:
All replays converted (well it only took 2 hours, but never did a post update) and replay engine can handle the new format. Only thing left is the save button which is just about done. There will also be a beta engine update as I also have the source to that.
regards,
~Velocity
Update #2:

We found a big red button… weren’t quite sure what it does but we decided to press it. What’s the worst that can happen?
Turns out it converts the replays to a more modern, compact form and brings them back online. We’ll let you know when it’s done!
regards,
~Velocity / aperson
Update: We’re working on the replays right now and have moved where the replays are currently stored. You won’t be able to access your saved replays for a bit while we do this.
I have trimmed down the replays database and removed any corrupted entries. Any replays that were not set to be saved have been deleted. Replays are now viewable again from your profiles, where you will see your saved replays as the last visible entries.
Recording new replays is still disabled. We will be working over the next few days to bring them back as I described in a previous post. We will keep you updated with changes as they happen.
Hope your 2011 is off to a great start!
Cheers,
aperson

Replays disabled
It appears that replays were causing the load issues that made the site crash around midnight central. I have disabled them and it looks like everything is running well again. Over the next few days I am going to be pruning the replay table in an attempt to make it more managable and less process intensive. Any replay files that were not flagged to be saved might be deleted as a result.
Update:
Our replay table is 2,453,387 replays big, clocking in at a bit over 5.5GB. The towering size of this database can be seen in how much more quickly the site loads now that they are disabled. However, replays are a great feature of the site and I am working to bring them back together in an improved form.
I am currently in the process of exporting the database off of FFR’s server and onto one of my personal servers so that I can optimize and prune it without slowing down the main site. After this is done, I will reimport the replay table into the site. I expect this to take about 3 days, after which you will be able to view replays but not create new ones.
I will also be working with Velocity to make replays an opt-in system instead of being automatically saved after each gameplay. Essentially, you will have a place you can click on the results screen to save the last gameplay, otherwise the replay will not be stored. Unfortunately, I believe we will also have to limit replay saves for the time being, but our plan is to start at a size that is too restrictive and then expand from there. Therefore, after this new system is implemented, expect modified limits on the number of replays you are able to save.
Cheers,
aperson
