I was just at the DDR machine at the Dayton Mall today and I looked for what you were talking about. Though I hadn't really paid attention before I read this thread, it's really obvious the machine's not legit. The marquee doesn't quite fit in the slot and has poorer print quality than it should be. The "frame" around the screen is wrong - it's not an EX frame (plus the button labels are in English.) One of the "select" buttons (the one on the machine itself) is white and round and the other one is orange.

I bet the one in Middletown is legit. I should take photos and post them somewhere.

I've heard there is two legit EX machines in the U.S. My friend Brian McClean owns one at Wright State University and I hear the other one is in Seattle.

And by the way, legit and legal are two different things. Just because the machines aren't supposed to be sold outside of the Japan doesn't mean the machine can't be legit (not bootlegged).

It was like 3-5 months ago. If you've been to gamefaqs you'd know that they purge their posts that are inactive. How long is how long? About 2 years or so. By new hardware I mean it will probably be on a dual disc dvd thing instead of single disc and it might have different pads or something. So it could have songs in the 400-500+ amount range.

Okay, I was really unclear on that. Let me put it this way.
You know how if you try to put a japanese PS2 game in an american PS2, it won't play, because it's only compatible with japanese PS2?

I'm talking, why not do the same thing with the game hardware and game software on DDR machines. So if I try to put bootlegged software for EX on my DDRMax machine, it won't work, because the hardware is rigged to only allow DDRMax to be played.
