    Investing in some gear.

So. I've decided to put some money down on hardware besides my laptop and/or software and get some fun stuff to hook up to it to find the best sound for it. The only thing is, I feel a bit amateurish when it comes to anything beyond that. With that said, I need to figure out some nice modest budget materials that I could use for (potential) live performance/playing.

The first thing I'm interested in investing in is a MidiNES. I already own a good ol' NES so it makes it that much easier, and hey, if I want an authentic sound, what better way than to use the NES's sound chip as a synth? Also, a built in visualizer? **** yes, perfect for shows. Keep note that this is not the ONLY instrument/synth I would be using in my music, but potentially the primary.

I also need a keyboard, I'm assuming a MIDI one if I want to be able to play my NES. I'd personally like something with more than 25 keys, although there's nothing wrong with that as most of my music falls within one octave, it might be convenient? Lemme know your opinion. I was thinking of getting perhaps an M-audio Oxygen 8, as it includes a USB cable to hook up to my laptop and M-audio has always been a trusty company for me and I don't know if I could rely on a cheapo one.

Cables. I'm guessing I will probably need some to hook my MidiNES to my keyboard (and with that said, I would be able to plug my MidiNES into it, and then the sound would be directed to whichever software I'm using, correct)?

I'm not entirely sure how I would do live shows (if by myself). I could use Ableton Live and load prerecorded samples like drum loops, basslines and whatnot and then perform live with the keyboard. I could use my mouse and keyboard here, but I'm assuming some sort of midi controller with trigger pads would be also convenient?

And I would maybe need some decent speakers, or not if the place I played them already had some set up? Would I need a mixer of any sort?

I appreciate any and all help. I would go to, say, guitar center and ask but honestly I would rather ask people I know a little better than a salesman. You dig?

    Re: Investing in some gear.

    UPDATE:

After talking with Shox <333 I have gathered up some materials I could use and how much they'd run me.

    Midines: $100

    M-audio Radium 49/61 note keyboard: $60-80 used

    Midiman Midisport 2x2: ~$15

Midi sensor (as soon as Shox remembers the site): $xxx

    Cables: $xxx

I could easily get this stuff for around $200, which is nice considering the price. I was thinking of hooking up a midi sensor to my IIDX controller to act and set all the buttons to triggers if I were to use it with ableton live.

also, I might want to invest in some decent speakers/monitors maybe? I currently listen and do everything through headphones and it can get fatiguing at times. Anyone know where I can find some?

Alright, so I've had my keyboard for a good while now. I'm still very sastified with it, and being able to set parameters to the knob makes sound tweaking soooo much easier/more flexible. The velocity sensitivity is nice but can be (lol) touchy if I'm just trying mess around with new melodies sometimes.

With that said... I really need to practice. I honestly don't have much experience playing a piano or keyboard and would really like to learn. I should look for some interactive teaching software or something rofl. =x

If you've never played any instrument before, I'd recommend getting lessons. And learning music theory and such.

If you have played an instrument, than just practice a lot and you'll get there.

What do you need help learning on the keyboard/piano?

I know a bunch of stuff, but just need to know what you're looking for.

i don't know about lessons personally. I've never taken a lesson in my life (aside from school band ) . I'm not going to say i'm a musical genius but i've gotten along decently so far. I usually reccomend just picking up an instrument and playing. You start to get an ear for what sounds good with what and what would be good to play next. At least that's how it's come for me. One of the best piano players I've ever heard has never been to a lesson, and he is absolutely astounding.

especially if you've already played an instrument like trumpet. ( Lol that's what i started
                        with in middle school)
You're going to have an ear for music already. Just keep at it

I'm not really sure what I'm looking for--perhaps some sort of "standard technique" for hand positions on the keyboard and whatnot? I dont have spider fingers and my dexterity is kinda low (which I hope this will help me build up) so I wonder if there are any general practices I could do just to increase technique and speed.
