Went to newegg for 5 seconds and looked under $100-$200 range and 23-24 inches and I found 105 results for monitors
not a single one of them CRT

It that range, just look around for monitors that don't have anything higher than a 5ms input delay. I don't have much experience with monitors other than what I have, so it's hard for me to recommend one. For $150, you probably won't be getting a TN monitor (which would have higher refresh rates and lower response times), so colors probably won't be an issue in that price range.

i've played mulitple games competitively at a high level, so i know a thing or two about monitors (as me for creds if you don't believe me). i shouldn't even be giving you advice at all since you are just being rude, but all you had to do was ask where to find them and i would have told you the following:

you aren't going to find them on newegg and probably not going to find them new at all. you are going to have to dig deeper than that and get them used, but they are the best you are going to get for primarily gaming in that price range.

          Re: Computer monitors

If your graphics card can't produce a steady >120 fps in whatever game you're playing it's not worth getting a >=120 Hz monitor. They're generally out of your budget anyway though.

It may be worth noting if you don't know already, if your computer can output greater FPS in game than the refresh rate of your monitor (usually 60 Hz), using VSync helps to ensure you don't lose frames. Just recently I had to change some settings in TF2, which was running at 300 fps with VSync. That makes the video card run unnecessarily hard because essentially I wouldn't see 4 of the 5 frames it would generate. Just something to keep in mind.

As for brands, Asus and Samsung are probably the most established brands. Acer and Benq are other options. Basically just choose one in the size you want and within your budget. Some monitors have speakers built in, but they are generally sub par to a separate sound system or headphones. Like all computer parts, try to wait for a sale before you buy.

            Re: Computer monitors

not true because it's still smoother if you are getting, say, 90 frames instead of 60 with a CRT. again, CRTs aren't going to be out of budget.

using vsync is bad because you are capping the amount of input you are sending the client and causing input lag. don't use it and find other means to cap your FPS or just deal with the tearing.

              Re: Computer monitors

Personally I have found that CRTs are rather hard on my eyes, while my LCD is a lot easier to look at for extended periods of time. It's just preference.

Read the OP a little closer, and I would encourage the OP to make 100% certain that the issue is in fact the monitor and not say, the graphics card. An easy way to do this is to run Fraps' FPS tracker while playing your games. If your FPS drops while playing then obviously lower settings or consider an upgrade to the graphics card.

                Re: Computer monitors

yeah it depends on what CRT you get, some of them have some really bad glare. one of the pitfalls, unfortunately.

using Fraps when there is no in-game fps counter is a good idea, but prefer the in-game one to Fraps when you can.

I know it's the monitor because I take my desktop to my friends house and he has a hdmi monitor that I use there. When I'm at his house I can play skyrim on max settings and borderlands 2 and get like 150 fps in LoL. When I come home and use my VGA monitor I can't play Skyrim at all on lowest, can barely play borderlands 2, and get around 60 FPS in LoL if I'm lucky and have slight tearing.

                    Re: Computer monitors

That's really weird. The display should have no bearing at all on how well you can run a game. Are you perhaps plugging your VGA cable into your motherboard instead of your video card?

I never thought about that till now actually. Yes I am it turns out, my graphics card doesn't have a VGA port, but it has a DVI. Would a DVI chord plugged into my graphics card/monitor work better than a VGA plugged into motherboard/monitor?

                        Re: Computer monitors

It'll work better by miles and miles and miles and

Basically because you had it plugged into your motherboard, your were using the CPU for both graphics and the all the other stuff that CPUs are used for in games. You weren't using your video card at all.

So yes, plug in a DVI cord and use the $150ish you just saved on hookers and blow. If need be you can find DVI to VGA adapters for cheap too.

I would check the boxes from your monitor or (if you built your computer) your video card before rushing out to buy a new cable. You may already have a cable or an adapter in there you can use.
