    What's wrong with my TV?

One day my 55-inch plasma Viera HDTV just died. Tried to turn it back on and got the "seven red blinking lights of death."

So today I pulled off the back and took pictures. I know I have a shaky camera hand due to repetitive-strain problems, but I took as many pics as I could of all the relevant hardware.

Does anything stand out as obviously busted?

Easiest thing to check is if any of the capacitors are busted. You can tell if they have a bulge at the exposed top. They look fine though...

    idk

      According to

      http://hsindependance.hubpages.com/h...-blink-failure

      It's a problem with the SU/SD/SC boards

if this were a topic on Fans and air conditioners I could point the problem in a jiffy

fixing a television is like trying to fix a computer, without changing anything or getting rid of anything important.

Re: What's wrong with my TV?

Pic 15 might have a bad cap in it (center of pic) also one on the left looks like might be blown. 14 looks like on top right (can't say for sure) also look at the caps that are perpendicular to the board. 10 same as 15 might not be blown could be black marker on top of cap (again can't tell due to blur)

I would start by replacing all busted or swollen caps. Then see if it turns on. Does it make a clicking sound when you try to turn it on?

You can generally find all parts/boards on ebay. Just need the part numbers from the boards. generally boards cost between 40-80 depending on which is needed. I would scour that thing for any broken solder points or circuit scarring.

            Late reply is late.

I still use a CRT. You kids and your new-fangled smoothscreen plasmatoid high-deflation aqua-ray stereotropical threedee combobulators... GOSH.

That is the sound I was anticipating. Not sure of exactly what component that is making it, but, Double and Triple check ALL the caps on ALL the boards. Replace any that are swollen (the tops of the round cylinders have the + imprinting on them) they should be flat on the + if not replace them. If they are cracked at all replace them. They all have 2 solder points and are relatively easy to replace.

                  Watch this video, very helpful:

If none of your caps are busted/swollen, you need to replace a PCB. More than likely it is the power board, look for failures on the BOARD.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what is wrong with your TV. I am just speculating from past experiences. I could only really tell if I had it in front of me. If you can pin-point EXACTLY where the sound is coming from, replace that whole board for a fix ;) Look for one of THESE.

                  Worst Case Scenario:
You spend $20 on caps, $40 on solderkit, $50-100 on a board and it doesn't work. In the end you get your hands dirty in the hardware side of things. It ends up being that blink failure and total loss. I hope its a cap issue! You may be able to sale that to a repair store. I am not sure of the resale value but yeah, just a thought.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Re: What's wrong with my TV?

I will probably end up selling the TV to someone who wants to tinker with it -- I'm too lazy to take the back off again.
