How do you play index?

I play spread right now, but i want to know how to play index and see if that helps me out.

To play index, close both of your hands and make your two indexes stand out. Obviously, you can't play spread and index at the same time... Either use WASD, the arrows, or something that looks similar (I know some people use 8624 from their keypad so that it looks like a real DDR mat).

Index's goal is to play like if each of your index was a leg on a DDR mat. I have a slightly harder time playing index than spread, but it's also a lot of fun.

Why the heck didn't I see this sooner. Anyways, if you don't have speed, you're not going to go anywhere with index. Try practicing on A LOT of stream files to get your speed and accuracy up. Also, when hitting triples and quads try developing your own method like I have.
There are several different ways to set up your keyboard for index. The typical way is to simply use the arrow keys. The same can go for the number keys. I sometimes move my keyboard sideways and use 4↑ 2← 6↓ and 8→

I plan index with my left index finger and my right middle on the arrow keys

Yeah you basically pretend your pointer fingers are your legs on a DDR mat. I played index since I was about 13, then just recently switched at the age of 19 to spread and have gotten pretty good at it. I had to switch because I basically reached a wall; there are certain things that are pretty much impossible with index. If you're already playing spread, you may as well just stay there.

spread, change your key layout so that you're using your index and middle finger on both hands. most use the as-kl setup.

and you hit triples and quads by pressing 3 or four keys at once.

obviously starting as index I can say it wasn't very easy to move over to spread although I have evolved into a 3 finger setup now that is definitely more efficient I imagine though it would be hard to go from spread to index.

personally, i'd say that 3 fingers (if they're on one hand) is very much...less efficient than spread.

you should keep it that way, I was an index player until I realized my PA was way better playing spread =D
