What is the meaning behind a username in the forums having a "*" next to their name?

It means they are trying to be invisible but you can see lower ranked users even if they are invisible.

* designates invisible. Higher rank can see lower rank: Admins > Mods > Vets > Reg users basically
+ designates a friend (via forum, not site)

I agues you can also see equal ranked invisible people. That doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm pretty sure only Forum Mods count as a higher rank than FFR Veterans. Not MP Mods or Chat Mods.

So basically it is pointless to set it to invisible because everyone can still see you.

If you're an admin, no one but admins can see you. If you're a forum mod, no one but admins and forum mods can see you (very useful). If you're a vet, no regular users can see you. So there is indeed a point.
