Heeeey everybody and a quick question

Hi everyone, I've had an account for at least a year but just started getting seriously into FFR. I'm definitely a newbie, but hopefully I'll get better quick My question is are good players supposed to be able to sightread any song or do they have them memorized? And if the most I can sightread is a tricky or (sometimes) difficult song than what is the best I will be able to do memorizing a song? Thanks!

Some people claim it works to their disadvantage memorizing a song. It seems to be better if you can sightread the levels because when you overthink how you are supposed to do a certain pattern, it can cause you to mess up. When you memorize things, you may memorize them wrong, like anticipating one pattern when it's really another pattern that's coming.

This isn't to say you're supposed to do one or the other, but it's better if you can do it without much memorization. Just memorize the part that always tricks you, and play the rest by eye.

I don't think he meant the whole file...but people do take screenshots on certain parts of files where they tend to mess up and study/memorise them.

Memorizing it helps, but really why bother? You play a song enough you'll naturally know where to slide your fingers. Take Destiny for example I can't recite or even guess the arrow order of the song yet I can nearly AAA it without a worry.

Now files like Vertex Beta it helps to learn to naturally slide your fingers, but I would suggest if your having troubles remembering to hit an arrow you record your score using a method of your choice to view and learn where you make the mistakes.

          Get what I'm saying?

It's more neuromuscular facilitation (muscle memory) than actual memorization. I find that it helps with fatigue in longer songs the more you're familiar with the notes and patterns, but can be a major hang up in trying to AAA a song. If you're having trouble AAA'ing because of this, move on to other songs and play that one a week (or multiple weeks) later. This may not help if you know the song cold, but it always helps to get a fresh look on a song after not playing it for awhile. Oh, and welcome to FFR

I think there's a difference when you guys say "memorize" as opposed to recognizing the patterns that come up in different songs. I'm sure that no one has the actual arrows memorized per se. However, I'm pretty sure that in any song that becomes familiar, you just know when the trill or the stream comes in sync with the music that is playing.

Yeah if I have problems on parts of a song I'll play it then go to the FFR replay and press play and pause for wen I need to examine how I'm pressing the arrows and etc. It works for me

recognition is helpful but like others have said, overthink it and you fail.

With recent files, more so the PR files, memorizing notes just happens by playing the file and hearing the song.
Memorizing a song is much easier than memorizing each individual note/pattern, we all have the beat/melody to some songs memorized simply from hearing the song a few times, and PR files go hand in hand with the music. It's similar to playing the piano I guess, even other people have said they like the files that make them actually feel like their playing the song. Just like you would remember the notes to a song on piano, we start to memorize the notes on our keyboard. Just like a piano player may remember a song from either looking at the sheet music or from playing it, we start to remember a song by looking at the chart while playing it or studying patterns in replays [well I dunno about everyone else but I find myself breaking down patterns in replays very often >_<].

Though, memorizing the arrows can actually be pretty dangerous as said already. Mental blocks are a terrible thing
I have a sightread FMO AAA, so by no means do you have to memorize, though for something like the bursts in Intergraation, there's practically no way to just try that song sightread and just get an insanely good score, you'll have to somewhat remember what burst is where.

I have whole sections of Final Step memorized, every single note. I could recite them right now; arrow direction, color, and approximate gap in between each arrow. It's the only level I've really had to do this in order to score well on it.

EDIT: There's also a section of Balloon Fever I had to memorize. It was about 5 notes, but I still know them even though I haven't played it in months. For the most part, though, you don't need to *memorize* even if you want to be able to anticipate things.

                        Aren't we overthinking the overthinking?

Generally, we're going to end up memorizing parts of it subconsciously whether we want to try or not. There's no one right way to do things; just do what's comfortable and hit the arrows as best you can. That's what it breaks down to.
