Re: I'm new...ok I'm not but
Something which would be worth getting into would be playing spread or at least four fingered. Four fingered is using your index and middle fingers from both hands on the arrow keys. To play spread do that but with different keys (which you must auto-hotkey). Also as your skills improve you will need to increase your speed mod which can be found in settings. As a beginners start with 1x and eventually you will work you way to 2x or even 3x. Also play songs you can't do as this is a good way to improve your skill level but DO NOT button mash which is when you just kinda senselessly mash the buttons.

Welcome to FFR. Have fun!No matter how many times the colors of the seasons change,
these feelings will never wither, swaying like a flower
If this is just a dream, then let it be a dream. I don't care.
My heart, filled with loving radiance
Is forever thinking of you.
These words that we play are a pleasant melody
All I want is to have you by my side,
so that I won't lose my smiling eyes
even on a night when we can't see the twinkling of the stars.Comment

Re: I'm new...ok I'm not but
Welcome, read stickies and have fun. I'll tell you the different styles, but there are no tricks or anything. All practice.
One style is Spread. Spread can be used with the keys zx,. askl qwio hjkl so on. Let's say I wanted to use zx,. First, put your middle finger on the z, then your pointer on the x, on your left hand, put your pointer on the , and your middle on the . In order to use these buttons, you must use auto hotkeys. Look for a thread called keymapping in FFR general talk.
The next it one handed, just use the arrows. No program like hotkeys is needed. There is 2 fingered, 3 fingered, and even 4 finger one-handed players.
The next style is index. Just use your index fingers on the arrows.
The last is 4 fingered. Use your index and middle finger on both hands on the arrrows.
good luck.Comment

Re: I'm new...ok I'm not but
Its true what they say about practice BUT its not the only thing you can tell him.
There are things you learn naturally by practicing that you can tell someone to save him/her the trouble of finding it out.
1.) Screen Shrinking: Minimize your screen and shrink your browser to where some of the game is cut off. This is somewhat like speed modding.
2.) Speed Mods: While playing higher than 1.75x seems a bit more choppy (Maybe im not used to it though..), speed mod is another alternative to help.
3.) Loud, hard, distinctive hits: This helps keep rhythm. Not only that, the softer you hit the more likely it is for your fingers to slip (IMO).
4.) Don't spend too much time playing ridiculously hard songs just because you think its cool to pass it. It wastes time and doesn't help you excel really. If you want to do that; do it on Stepmania where you can actually fail songs. Trial and error works for excelling on most games; but in order for trial and error to work, you need the error part... not only the trial. Its as hard to fail on master songs as it is as hard to do well on it if you mash.
5.) Play stepmania. Play it now. Play play play. Why? The trial and error part like I said. Not only that... wider variety to pratice with. www.stepmania.com and read the tutorials on the forum on how to get it running. After playing Stepmania for a while; your skills will increase at 2x the rate (In my opinion...).Comment

Play nonstop for weeks. Take a break before you get horrible frustrated. Come back to the game and realize you have gotten better. Practice practice, break, practice practice. The weight of what I say depends on how you feel.Comment
